Mad’in Europe, a commitment for European Cultural Heritage – The choice of Craftsmanship

European craftsmen in areas such as wood, metal, glass, ceramic, textile, stone crafts, music instruments and restoration are the guardians of European diversity, cultural heritage and know how. They are now facing business troubles because of their small visibility within an offer of cheaper and more accessible products. Moreover, during the last decades, apprenticeship and training in traditional crafts in Europe has progressively decreased and new generations are no more considering these careers.

Consequently, despite an increasing interest for rare and customized services and products, many traditional crafts are disappearing.

Mad’in Europe’s has started its activity at the end of 2013 with objective to bring sustainable and concrete support to these micro-businesses, through different actions. Mad’in Europe is connecting the European art-crafts community with international potential users: private consumers, architects, designers, interior designers, musicians, …

Its action since then has been covered by press and received a reward in 2015 (Victors 2015 – Jury & Public award) for its commitment in favor of Craftsmanship.
Action & Achievements of Mad’in Europe in three years

- Select professional high qualified makers in the above-mentioned areas, all over Europe, gather them into a unique portal (www.madineurope.eu) and make them accessible worldwide thanks to a multilingual search engine based on several key wording levels. Over 1.750 have been accepted after evaluation of their profile. They come from more than 10 European countries. New applications come every week. When accepted, craftsmen members are asked to be active and responsible of keeping their profile updated, sharing it with contacts and asking for reviews & quotations.
- Promoting crafts themselves through editorials, interviews, focus, agenda of main events in order to develop public’s awareness about crafts.
- Promote the transmission of know-how proposed by craftsmen through internships and classes.
- Support craftsmen sales through the e-commerce platform, created in November 2016. Only selected pieces are proposed to the public according to specific subjects.
- Develop the synergies between the contemporary design world and craftsmanship.

To assure these steps Mad’in Europe has created a network all over Europe and is collaborating with many regional, national & international institutions. The purpose is to merge energies and resources of all stakeholders and to focus on a common vision which is “supporting excellence by bringing sustainable growth”.

Interior Design in a Tin - Our natural paints are designed, created and ‘homemade’ for you by the interiors expert, Edward Bulmer. Like a top chef, Edward is passionate about every colour we produce, how it has been made and the raw materials we use to make it. It not only matters that this paint colour will look beautiful in your home, for Edward, our paint must not cost the earth.

When you decide to buy our paints you are getting more than a beautiful colour and quality finish, you are getting passion and knowledge from one of the UK’s leading interior designers. Edward has been in the House & Garden Top 100 since it began. He is without doubt the ‘go to’ interior designer if you have a historic home or building project. Although he got side tracked with his campaign to clean up the paint industry which led to the creation of Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, he remains in demand for that rare combination of historical knowledge, creativity and practicality that he brings to major restoration projects in the nation’s most important buildings and family homes.

Edward has spent the last 30 years working in some of Britain’s finest buildings. He is a leading interior designer, architectural historian and ‘colourman’, renowned for restoring our heritage buildings, bringing his expert knowledge to conservation and his design flair to the creation of new spaces for modern living.

The Colourman - Edward is a master in both the art and science of colour, an expert with a mission to revive the world of natural colour. He is an accomplished artist himself and so he understands pigment and colour and how colours work in a room. He has designed the Edward Bulmer Natural paint range using just 12 natural earth and mineral pigments used by artists for centuries. He also has that technical knowhow and practical experience to translate historic colour references into paint shades perfectly suitable for fashionable, modern living. No other paint company has a recognised designer at the helm. Edward is a colour expert with exquisite taste and all our colours are designed, made and mixed by him for you.

Imagine if you could invite one of the country’s leading interior designers into your home to advise you on colour choices and types of paint for period or modern interiors. That is precisely the experience you will get from Edward Bulmer Natural Paint with a colour collection of unified tonal palettes reflecting years of experience which has also been passed onto our growing team of colour consultants .

We are a registered charity working to foster earth building in all its diversity. In Lingala, a common language in Congo, EBUKI means 'I work, I dance'; we like that ...

Where we started - EBUKI started with a meeting, in 2007, of people and organisations interested in increasing and normalising earth in construction. To make earth building normal requires more research, more teaching and training, more standards, more assessment, more information, more networking, more built examples, more experienced professionals, in other words more of lots of different activities! So, we agreed that an organisation, which fostered the use of earth as a building material in all its forms was essential. We have had a great deal of success and continue to grow our organisation from strength to strength.

What we do

- increase awareness about earth building
- keep our website and social media resources updated on a range of earth building topics
- provide expert speakers and workshop leaders at our National events
- arrange information gathering and dissemination
- work with National and International partners to write, publish and set new standards for earth building techniques
- develop accredited standards in training for earth builders
- send earth builders, trainers and assessors for accredited training
- work to develop a library of information about materials and techniques
- work to develop a mapping facility of UK and Irish earth buildings
- act as an umbrella for research, development and practice funding applications
- participate actively in a European earth building network
- pursue a range of agendas, which make the use of earth much easier
- encourage similar earth building organisations in Africa
- coordinate with joint research (Currently exploring opportunities in India)

Our achievements so far

Since our first meeting we have:

- held annual earth building conferences with a broad range of themes (9yrs)
- run an annual earth building festival 'Clayfest' (2yrs)
- joined a network of European earth building organisations and co-written training standards with them for Clay Plasters and all the major Structural Earth techniques
- written a UK National Occupational Standard (NOS) For Level 3 Learners
- written a UK National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) For Level 3 Learners
- pursued agendas on training and assessment to ensure the NOS and NVQ are available to employers and training organisations
- ensured that the same practice can be taken up in the Republic of Ireland
- published regularly in social media and on our website, advertising upcoming events, workshops and projects, plus educational information
- published an informative newsletter
- become a partner organisation of the UNESCO Chair on Earth Architecture, linking us to other organisations around the world
