Restoration & Reproduction of Period Stained Glass & Leaded Lights

With access to over 800 different types of glass, we are able to match existing glass from all periods to ensure the most sympathetic restoration. In addition, we can repair and replace damaged leadwork. Where a repair is simply not possible, we can reproduce existing designs using historic glass and hand painting. We can also repair timber and metal period frames and fittings, or create perfect reproductions to preserve the historic look of a building.

Design & Manufacture of New Stained Glass & Leaded Lights

Whether you are looking for traditional leaded light windows or doors for a new or period building, or something more contemporary, we can provide a solution for you. With a vast range of different types of coloured and plain glass at our fingertips, and our skilled glass painters - we can turn your designs into reality. Once designed and manufactured, our team will install your new windows or doors using either modern or traditional materials as required.

At Norgrove we undertake the repair and rebuilding of all early periods of glasswork, with attention to the replacement of glass only where necessary, with second-hand, or more usually, new handmade mouthblown glasses to match originals. We specialize in the repair of painted and stained glass damaged by accident or vandalism. Our blacksmith will repair existing ferramenta and casements, make facsimiles in wrought iron or stainless steel, and make subtle window guards in stainless steel, powder coated matt black, to protect important glass. We have a close relationship with one of the finest producers of handmade glass in Europe, and have in the recent past manufactured hand made glass to replicate broad glass of the mid 17th C for the National Trust.

Much of our work is the care and restoration of plain glazing, from the 16th C to the 19th C. In this we follow the SPAB philosophy. Leatharby architectural and craft students visit our workshops as part of their courses. We are glaziers to Warwick Castle, Lichfield and Hereford Cathedrals, Compton Wynyates and others. The National Trust and Landmark Trusts are perhaps our largest secular clients. We are approved by English Heritage for the conservation of both plain and early, painted glass, - we are also pleased to offer designs for newly - commissioned stained glass windows. These are designed, painted and fired completely in our own workshops.

We are a small firm, comprising six tradesmen, of whom three are glass painters, with the flexibility and specialist knowledge to provide the product and service historic buildings merit. We have worked on properties for the most sensitive of clients - our personnel have been, and are, vetted for any potentially delicate situation.

Established in 1998, The Mosaic Restoration Company is a leading specialist in mosaic design, fabrication and restoration across all types of properties, from a Victorian or Edwardian geometric hallway in a private house to the major reinstatement mosaic works in public buildings.

Originally from London and now based in Northamptonshire in the Midlands, they carry out mosaic restoration and new mosaic works throughout the UK and Europe, including many prestigious projects in Central London.

The Mosaic Restoration Company is a family run business headed up by leading expert Gary Bricknell with over 30 years experience working with mosaics. Gary’s passion for mosaics began as a child during visits to his Uncle Trevor’s workshop in South London, and at the age of 18 he began working with Trevor Caley the well known established mosaic artist and designer.

Gary moved The Mosaic Restoration Company from London to Northamptonshire in 1999 with his family. The central location of the business was better positioned to work on projects throughout the UK including Scotland and the north of England. The company gradually expanded and over the last 20 years has established an excellent reputation in all areas of mosaic design, restoration and conservation.

At their purpose built workshop in Daventry in Northamptonshire, they are able to conserve and restore existing or fabricate new mosaics to order. The large workshop and studio enables clients to see works in progress and view their comprehensive range of salvaged mosaics kept in stock including very rare marble mosaics, glass mosaic and venetian glass mosaics.

Although much of the works is generated by recommendation, the website has been very important to reach potential new commercial and residential clients with the facility of a quick and easy quote request system. For large commercial projects we will provide detailed mosaic reports following a comprehensive mosaic survey carried out on site.

The company is unique with a fresh and friendly approach to running its business. All staff are directly employed and trained to a high standard and have pride in the work they carry out. Be it a small private job, or a large public commission each project receives the same great attention to detail.

The company has received numerous awards over the years including ‘excellence in Contract Tiling’ from the TTA and in 2018 the Sussex Heritage Award for mosaic works to Hastings Library. In the same year Gary received ‘Master Craftsman Wall and Floor Tiler’ award from ‘The Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers’.

My introduction to the glory of stained glass began whilst visiting Canterbury Cathedral during my time at Canterbury College of Art, which was situated in view of this magnificent Gothic building. Entering the huge vaulted Nave and up into the Choir I was immediately overwhelmed by strength of colour of the windows; powerful flowing imagery and the scale of the series of figures depicting the genealogy of Christ beginning with the finest of all “Adam delving” (1170). This series of windows remain some of the finest examples of western medieval art – from that time I was hooked!

My creative development at Art School (Northampton School of Art and Canterbury College of Art) began through influences of teachers who introduced me particularly to European Art from the pre-Renaissance e.g. frescoes of Giotto and Cimabue. At that time I discovered one of the most moving self-portraits by Rembrandt on an early visit to the National Gallery. Art School also showed me American Abstract Expressionism – Rothko, Pollock, de Kooning; Post-Impressionism (Cezanne). Of course I could not leave out Picasso, Matisse and Chagall who were constants throughout the century, they have all contributed to my own creativity.

Following graduation (Fine Art) I had the opportunity to join the Cathedral Studios and work on these great windows. I spent almost four years studying design; glass painting; the art and craft of this unique visual medium as well as the conservation of these 800-year-old masterpieces.

An early memory is viewing the high level windows “up close” on scaffolding assisting Professor Madeline Caviness as she carried out her research on the stained glass windows for the CVMA volume on “The Windows of Christ Church, Canterbury” later published (1981). This was a huge learning experience, an insight into the quality of these great works and influential in my creative development at that time. The viewing of the glass was, of course, in the context of its part in the fabric of the building. The light source for this Great Church but also its texture, the impurities of blown glass, its kiln fired painted surface and the raw unpainted Caen stone – such harmony!

We specialise in the conservation, restoration and protection of stained glass and leaded glazing from the 12th Century to the 20th Century. Typical jobs may involve the cleaning and protection of medieval stained glass; the restoration of finely painted stained glass of the 17th and 18th centuries, or the stabilisation of loose or bulging Victorian windows.

Whatever the scale or historic significance of a job, our aim is to safeguard the stained glass or glazing scheme within its architectural setting, limiting intervention and preventing further deterioration.

Conservation Projects - Over 32 years in practice we have worked on a wide range of conservation projects which has led to the team gaining an excellent reputation for successfully undertaking specialist work and has led to long term relationships with many of our clients. We pride ourselves on our site-fixing work ensuring that all work is sympathetically installed, particularly within an historic context where traditional materials and methods are employed.

Protective glazing for deteriorating stained glass - The deterioration of glass (particularly medieval glasses) and its delicate painted surfaces is exacerbated by the presence of moisture both from the elements and from condensation. Corrosion processes of a window can be halted by the introduction of ventilated protective glazing. We have been designing, manufacturing and installing environmental protective glazing systems for over 20 years.

Surveys and Reports - We undertake methodological condition surveys which analyse the condition of and provide conservation options for either an individual window or an entire glazing scheme. Fully illustrated reports are made for diocesan faculty-applications and grant-applications to funding bodies, including the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Churches Buildings Council and The Glaziers Trust.

Repair of damaged stained glass - Stained glass may be damaged by accident or by vandalism. It is our aim to restore what has been lost by repair, or replacement if necessary, using the same materials and techniques used in the original window. Where possible in-situ repairs are carried out.

Stained glass conservation and restoration at Canterbury Cathedral started relatively early, and was entrusted to four generations of the same family (Austin and Caldwell) for over 130 years. George Austin (Senior) was first appointed Surveyor to the Cathedral in 1819. This was a significant time and was the starting point towards the strong interest and campaign in the repair and conservation of the stained glass windows in the Cathedral

In 1972 The Cathedral Studios Stained Glass Workshop was established and still undertakes the care and conservation of the stained glass windows at Canterbury Cathedral. A part of The Cathedral Studios today also work in the conservation and restoration of stained glass with commercial clients who include English Heritage, The National Trust, Westminster Abbey, Gloucester Cathedral, Parish Churches, Castles, Museums, Stately homes and Private homes throughout the country. The Studio is one of the leading stained glass conservation studios in the UK.

The Cathedral Studios workshop is based in the heart of the City of Canterbury, set inside the Cathedral precincts. The workshop is equipped with conservation, painting and designing spaces and a glazing workshop. We have our own lead milling facilities and darkroom photography studio. The glass in our care is stored in climate controlled and secure areas. The studio is able to accommodate small and large scale projects.

Established in 1988 in Berkshire, cjl designs has been involved in a large number of restoration projects in England and Wales. We have also designed and made new stained glass for private commissions and exhibited stainless steel and glass sculptures in a number of venues. Having recently moved our studio from Frome to West Pennard, near Glastonbury, we offer a professional and personal service for the restoration of existing glass, frames and window furniture.

For the last 25 years we have worked with the same reliable, high quality shot-blasters during the refurbishment process. It is important to use a company who take care to preserve historic metalwork while only removing corrosion and old paint finishes.

We work in collaboration with a local artist blacksmith when needed so adding flexibility to the bespoke service we can offer. This includes designing and building new metal frames and other ferramenta.

We offer condition surveys with recommendations for remedial work; the refurbishment of leaded lights and metal frames, including Crittal type; advice on prevention of water ingress and fitment of protective grilles. Work is undertaken both in situ and in the studio.)

Projects have included: churches within the Oxford, Winchester and Guildford dioceses; the Falkland Islands Chapel, Pangbourne; Roundway Hospital, Devizes; Littlecote House, Hungerford; Worcester Cottage, Brecon; and other listed buildings.

The Glaziers’ Company is one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London. It dates from the 14th century (more about the history of the Company can be found here). Today its members play a full role in the civic life of the City of London and enjoy valuable networking and social opportunities.

Through its charity, The Glaziers Foundation, it supports education and conservation, and all its activities are devoted to promoting the art and craft of stained glass.

More than half a century ago the York Glaziers Trust was formed, building on centuries of craftsmanship associated with York Minster, Britain's treasure-house of stained glass. The Trust is an independent charitable trust dedicated to the care of the Minster's windows and the preservation of historic stained glass nationwide - the vision of Eric Milner-White (1884-1963), Dean of York from 1941 until his death in 1963.

The Trust now employs an international team of 21 members of staff. As well as their original premises on Deangate, for the last decade the Trust has also operated a second workshop at Bedern Chapel, York, the former ancient home of the Minster's Vicars Choral since 1349. From 1998 to 2007 the Trust was involved in the conservation of York Minster's c.1414 St William window. Another particular highlight, from 2011 to early 2018, has been the conservation of the Great East Window (1405-08) by the glass-painter John Thornton, one of the most important and well-known stained glass craftsmen of the medieval period. From 2016, the Trust has also initiated a 20-year rolling programme of conservation and environmental protection in partnership with York Minster, beginning with the conservation of three of the Minster's world-famous fourteenth-century nave aisle windows.

As accredited conservators we offer advice, produce reports and undertake work on secular and ecclesiastical buildings throughout the UK. We adhere to industry standards of health and safety, with employees PASMA trained in mobile scaffolding and carrying Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) cards.
