A nineteenth-century farmhouse in Katonah, NY, is home to Barbara Israel Garden Antiques' impressive array of period ornament from Europe, America, and Asia. The formal gardens surrounding the house are the perfect setting for our collection of fountains, statues, sundials, urns and gate pier finials, furniture, fencing, and wellheads dating from the fifteenth through the early twentieth centuries. Barbara Israel Garden Antiques works closely with landscape architects, designers, and private clients to find the ideal object for each individual garden. French building materials - We present all on our stock website kept up to date daily by our own staff. To renovate or restore complete properties, or room by room, the charm and patina of the old is so authentic compared to new materials. The authenticity of the products and their patina enable you to travel through eras that marked the history of France. Certain items with decorative detail have the required « passport » that we apply for at France’s Ministère de la Culture, enabling traceability and thereby authorizing export. Typical project-based orders are combinations of antique products such as oak beams, French limestone fireplaces, reclaimed stone flooring like interior flooring and exterior paving and steps, with even roof tiles and walling stone on the most complete project packages.

Antique building materials and their patina - Wood, stone and terra-cotta stay in fashion, and obtain their natural patinas over time. Our team of qualified professionals is sensitive to this and select the best reclaimed building materials in order to offer authentic products of high quality. For example floors in terra-cotta, marble or stone last for decades (and centuries), are durable assets whilst gaining patina and without requiring periodic replacement, whilst most modern industrial floors age badly, can « go out of fashion » and get replaced in the most un-ecological manner. Antique Buildings Ltd is an award winning planning and architectural consultancy, celebrated for its commitment to conservation and design. The salvage yard at Antique Buildings carries an immense stock of ancient oak beams - protected from the weather in their 100ft by 50ft storage barn. Wide oak floorboards (suitable for laying over underfloor heating) are a particular speciality - whole floors, laid in the various re-erected buildings, are open for viewing. The salvage yard also offers diverse stocks of handmade bricks, roof and floor tiles, stone paving and unusual heritage items.

The company's name 'Antique Buildings Ltd' was chosen back in 1983 to reflect the company's specialisation in saving ancient timber framed buildings; there are always a number of complete ancient barn, cartshed and granary frames in stock ready for re-erection. Within their two storey 9000sq.ft. warehouse they have fireplace surrounds and fireplace accessories, belfast sinks, cast iron radiators, as well as internal and external period doors. They are best known for their varied selection of reclaimed building materials; stocking the famous Norfolk red, Suffolk white bricks. Roofing materials include original pantiles, peg tiles and reclaimed slates. They hold an extensive selection of reclaimed flooring pine and oak floorboards, traditional Suffolk pamments, reclaimed flagstone flooring and salvaged quarry tiles.

WHY SALVAGE?

At The Architectural Forum, we are very conscious of the importance of reclaiming and salvaging, and the positive impact on our global resources and environment. We believe it is imperative to reclaim, refurbish and reuse as much as possible, as this puts less pressure on resources and stops the items simply going to landfill. With our emphasis on refurbishing and restoring, we are proud to be preserving the valuable skills of yesteryear, and giving antique items a second life and a chance to be appreciated by future generations.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

On the surface, the process of salvaging parts from an old building can seem relatively straightforward, but it is often a very challenging and pressured task, full of complications! Once onsite, Jason and the team often have very little time to recognise and remove the key pieces that are of salvageable and saleable condition. Sometimes, as beautiful and historically interesting as they may be, pieces cannot be saved as they would take far too long to restore, or take too much room in storage.

Once the salvage is removed, they are taken to one of our premises for restoration. Restoration and refurbishment of all iron items, including cast iron fireplace inserts, fixtures and fittings, and cast iron radiators, is done at our workshop in Hertfordshire. Reclaimed stonework is repaired by Architectural Forum's in-house mason. Wooden items are repaired and re-polished, and some may be repurposed or re-crafted into a new item. Old, redundant, Victorian window frames, for example, are up-cycled into charming, large mirrors by glazing them with new mirror glass.

Architectural Forum also has a network of specialist craftspeople who can assist in the restoration of other items, for instance, replacing broken globe lanterns in early Victorian street lamps.

We particularly specialise in marble and limestone mantelpieces but these days there is a great emphasis on energy efficient fires be it to burn wood, a carbon neutral process, or highly efficient gas fires. Electric and bio fuel are increasing in popularity too.

Amazing Grates started in the spring of 1979, we had just moved into a substantial house that needed everything – from the foundations up – renovated and updated. We had moved back from the hills of mid Wales restoring furniture to return to the capital with our then 4 young children. The Victorian fireplaces were intact throughout the house but we decided to remove three from the bedrooms and sell them in the antique trade, but no one was interested. Three months later we put an advertisement in the Ham and High local newspaper – the response was wonderful – not only did we receive about 250 replies but in particular we met other people who shared an interest in restoring period houses. Not so commonplace then!
