I have surveyed thousands of Listed Buildings of every type and age, throughout England and Wales. I also lecture regularly on building surveying, architectural history and building conservation topics to professional groups, Universities as an External Lecturer and also to the general public on cruise ships worldwide and U3A. I have also done TV and radio work.

I was Chair of the RICS Building Conservation Steering Group for six years, from 2017 to 2023, and I am the lead author of the 2nd Edition of the RICS Professional Standard on ‘Conservation of Heritage Buildings and Assets’.

I am lucky enough to combine my passion with my professional work – my love of historic buildings has taken me all over the world and has driven a lifetime of learning. Whether it’s investigating beetle damage in a historic timber-frame or discovering the secrets of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, there’s always something new to find.

A knowledge base for the setting out and design of staircases and handrails. Wishing to know more about how a staircase works? or how to get the handrail to flow nicely around the curves of a geometric flight of stairs? From our staircase glossary you find the part that you wish to know more about and follow that link down to get, when available, more information on the four main sections about that part. the sections we have split this information into are: Design, technical drawing, manufacture, and on-site installation.

We are building this information as fast as we can but at the same time keeping it as accurate as possible to real life situations that work. We will add variuos styles of visuals to help explain the processes or designs. Some of these visuals will be 3D interactive models so you can turn layers on or off and look at them from different angles to get a better understanding of that stage of building stairs.

We at CS Lofts are a passionate family run company who specialises only in loft conversions. All of our craftsmen are qualified and insured. We are also members of check-a-trade with a high average score. We have experience from over 300 loft conversions and specialise in all types of loft conversions.

We understand that no two loft conversations are the same and that is why we offer a tailored service that caters for the needs of every client. We offer a complete start to finish, hassle free experience which includes using our in-house architect for architectural plans, structural calculations and also building control and planning which we organise on your behalf so you only need to deal with us directly.

Why Choose CS Lofts?

- Most loft conversion companies in London will sub-contract the work through to smaller companies, so by coming direct to CS Lofts you will be potentially saving thousands on your conversion, plus received a higher quality of care and service.

- We do not sub-contract any work and we take full responsibility for the project, overseeing it to completion at every stage and ensuring we employ only the very best craftsmen.

- Once we have given you a quote for your loft conversion that is it! We sign a contract with you guaranteeing the cost of the job. This will not change whatsoever unless you change your mind and add some elements in, or in the unfortunate event that we find some issues that need to be resolved. We pride ourselves on our transparency and this shows through every step of our process.

- CS Lofts will be with you throughout the project ensuring that we exceed all of your requirements and that you are kept informed throughout the project and your needs are met.

- We are Loft conversion specialists. Unlike many other companies, who take on multiple varieties of jobs, we specialise only in loft conversions and our experience shows in every project we undertake.

With over 40 years experience Eminent Master Blacksmith Don Barker is a leading producer of top quality ironwork. He has been entrusted with many prestigious commissions for nationally important and iconic buildings whilst giving the same care and consideration to the smallest of jobs.

We are a small architectural studio specialising in the trasnformation of historic buildings and the design of beautifully crafted new homes.

Mark Hines was the project architect responsible for the £1.4bn remodelling and transformation of the BBC’s grade two* listed Broadcasting House. He is a former design director of respected London design practice MacCormac Jamieson Prichard and is one of the UK’s few Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Scholars, which was set up in 1877 by William Morris.

Having gained valuable experience in a large office, our architectural practice unites contemporary design and conservation and is focussed on how architecture can help improve people’s quality of life.

Working on listed buildings often requires the involvement of a design architect and a conservation specialist. Our background in both worlds unites high-quality design and conservation expertise in a single practice, allowing us to breathe new life into all types of historic buildings.

We see architecture, restoration, interior design, and conservation work as discrete strands of a single discipline, rather than separate specialisms in their own right. This approach can help enhance the experience and image of the building and create places where historic architecture, later modifications, carefully judged restoration work and successive redevelopment projects all merge and blend seamlessly into a single harmonious whole.

Born out of a passion for craft and making, our new projects combine the qualities of traditional architecture but meet contemporary needs. We try to give all our buildings an air of timelessness and durability with a focus on warmth, comfort, and character and use beautiful, traditional materials like brick, stone, and timber in different ways to create cosy, humane and atmospheric buildings.

Our experience in the design, conservation, and commercial worlds allows the development of new proposals that are directly informed by a thorough understanding of the specific historical, cultural, social, economic and physical context of each situation and helps us simplify the design and construction process, balance competing demands and minimise costs.

"Destination architectural salvage company and design studio. A showroom housed across two buildings in Kensal Green sells architectural elements including tropical hardwoods, quality windows, doors, stone, vintage and antique furniture, rugs, lighting and eye catching one-off finds."

The Retrouvius design studio turns respectfully re-used materials to distinctive, contemporary ends. Taking only a few projects each year, in properties ranging from contemporary penthouse to medieval priory, yacht to boutique, each is attentively tailored to the evolving needs of the client as well as the demands of the site.

Photographs only tell part of the story: beneath the inventively applied wood and stone, the lovingly hand-dyed and reclaimed textiles, lie larger tales of transformation, and relationships with clients that stretch over multiple projects.

We are design-led and research-orientated. We are critical about what we do. But we have lots of fun as we love the challenge of the craft of building.

We undertake commissions both small and large and specialise in projects that respond creatively to their context.

We work with an interdisciplinary network of makers, builders, and designers leading to innovative collaborations.

We are committed to design, detailing and materiality. Attention to detail has always been our lens, and our love for design and building sites is the engine.

We take the term collaboration seriously. Architecture studios have a social responsibility to the public, a technical responsibility to the structure and an intellectual responsibility
