Spencer Hall Historic Building Conservation (SHHBC) has been formed after 25 years of working in the heritage industry. Spencer has worked on many projects in this time, from traditional residential properties to some of the largest schemes completed in the UK - each is given the same respect and attention to detail.

Spencer is fully conversant in the intricacies of conservation philosophy and approaches all projects with integrity and a developed ethical code in line with accepted conservation standards.

Why Choose SHHBC? - Passionate about historic buildings, Spencer completed his post graduate studies in conservation in the late 1990’s. He is now an ICON accredited Conservator-Restorer, a Full Member of the IHBC and a Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB). He has worked continuously within the industry for over 25 years, during which he has worked for some of the countries leading conservation companies. Now independent, Spencer collaborates with experienced colleagues to offer a refined service to Conservation Architects, Trusts & Bodies (such as English Heritage & The National Trust) on both buildings and their contents. He is able to provide everything from initial specialist consultancy services through to the delivery of complex Conservation & Restoration projects.

Building Conservation is the art of restoring historic structures to their former glory with the least amount of input and the least amount of destruction of historic fabric possible, it is the art of retention of patina, it is knowledge of material, traditional building techniques, understanding of surroundings and appreciation of style and design.

Splitlath BC, has been in existence in one form or another since 1867,making it probably the oldest builders in Great Britain starting life in Stourbridge, in the heart of the Black Country as Barge Builders, the same family has owned the business up to the present day.

Splitlath are when you want the finest craftsmen, when you want the finest materials, when you want your project handled by people who care, who understand, our aim is to make each and every project a pleasureable experience, a lifetime experience, we work with recognised qualified Architects who specialise in Historic Buildings and share our beliefs to provide a harmonious team.

The demand for our skills has been such that we have recently opened a new office in Hong Kong where Colonial Buildings are being recognised for their historic value and design, We are however, no strangers to this region where our sister company Splitlath Group has operated for many years, we are the first Conservation Builders to do this.

We operate an honest and traditional Apprentice scheme and are members of:

- The CITB
- Considerate Contractors Scheme
- Institute of Historic Building Consultants
- Eclesiastic Architects and Surveyors Association
- Royal Institute British Architects
- CHAS

We are a medium sized practice with specialist skills in building conservation and sustainable architecture. We offer creative solutions to design problems within a historic or a contemporary context. We have excellent technical ability in building conservation but understand the need for creativity in all things architectural. Working in close collaboration with our clients and other professionals, the practice has a deserved reputation in the field of the historic environment, especially within the ecclesiastical world but bring our skills to bear on projects for many others who own or care for old buildings, as well as a large number of private clients commissioning domestic work.

Based in the cathedral city of Salisbury, projects range regionally, across the south of England and further afield. We have no desire to impose a house-style, rather to find design outcomes appropriate to context and to individual circumstance. The portfolio of work on this website illustrates the diversity of the solutions that result and the partners, Michael Drury and Antony Feltham~King are always very happy to discuss future projects in person.

The National Trust, English Heritage, Ecclesiastical Clients and home owners of grade listed buildings are amongst our client base that expects ‘excellence in building’ within a cost conscious financial plan.

The Stained Glass Museum offers a unique insight into the fascinating history of stained glass, an art-form that has been practised in Britain for at least thirteen hundred years.

Our permanent gallery displays over 125 stained glass panels representing eight hundred years of the history of this ancient art, from the thirteenth century to the present day.

All the stained glass panels in the gallery are displayed at eye-level enabling visitors to have a rare close-encounter with the art of stained glass. Temporary exhibitions are also held throughout the year, highlighting panels and designs from the Museum's reserve collection.

Steel Window Service, a member of the Steel Window Association, has been in the industry since 1951 and is recognised as a leading company specialising in the design, supply and fix, servicing, repair and replacement of steel windows.

Experienced in carrying out contracts of all sizes in the commercial and domestic sector, we offer a full advisory and project management service directly to the public local authorities, property management companies, housing associations, architects and main contractor builders.

With a comprehensive quality assurance system in place, the directors have addressed health and safety issues and our teams of directly employed fixers are all experienced skilled workers who have been with the company for many years.

Our Windows - The modern steel window is galvanised for positive rust-proofing, and with a durable and attractive polyester powder coating, provides a long-lasting product with low-cost maintenance.

The large range of SMW, SMW+, W20, W30, W40 and fire rated steel window and door products we offer, allow versatility of design and enables us to offer replica replacement windows of an exact match in historic and listed buildings, as well as offering far greater levels of thermal and acoustic insulation to meet the ever-increasing demands of the UK Building Regulations.

The introduction of double and triple glazing units to our ranges, up to 28mm thick, has not affected the slender elegant sightlines that are synonymous with mild steel windows, as well as the well-proven values of inherent strength, fire resistance, maximum security and resistance to vandalism.

As an alternative to sometimes costly replacement, we also offer a complete overhaul, upgrade and repair service. Steel windows and doors can be made entirely operable and draught free by servicing - a process of oiling, easing and adjusting the opening frames, removing excess paint and straightening if necessary, to ensure correct closure. Security locks and trickle ventilators can be supplied and fixed. Full draught-proofing services are offered. Fittings can be tightened, re-fixed or replaced to match where necessary and panes re-glazed.

Should the buildings in your care require repair or replacement work one of our experienced estimator surveyors would be glad to meet you on-site to discuss particular requirements and offer technical advice.

Design - Our expert team using CAD systems are able to offer a full technical service ensuring the best possible design solution for the discerning client.

We produce full working drawings to provide an 'as built' view of proposed windows as well as full-size sectional details for your approval prior to manufacture on all contracts.

Project Management - Individual projects are assigned a personal project manager to handle the assignment from conception to completion. Close site supervision ensures successful installation by our directly employed teams of experienced CSCS certified operatives.

The management and staff of Stone Restoration Services Ltd have accumulated years of experience dealing with restoration and conservation of some of the South of England's most well known and prestigious Historic Buildings, structures, churches and monuments.

Our masonry yard and sawing set up is ideally located to provide a production base able to offer a perfect back up for larger projects and capable of fulfilling the requirements of all stone, marble and granite contracts. Our premises allow for large storage areas where new or salvaged masonry can be retained safely for clients on either a long or short term basis.

"All drawings and design are undertaken in-house. The project conception phase is controlled directly by us and therefore receives the utmost attention to detail"

The majority of our masons have worked with us for many years and the quality of their skills are evident on numerous schemes in which we have all been involved.

We hold a major position of strength over our rivals in that all drawings and design works are undertaken in-house. This means that project conception phase is controlled directly by us and therefore receives the utmost attention to detail. We do not allow this critical stage to be sub-let to external sources.

We also specialise in brickwork repairs including in-situ restoration, the replacement of gauged arches and tuck-pointing. We have invested greatly into all aspects of the care and refurbishment of stone, marble and granite including the re-texturing of paved surfaces to restore non-slip finishes in line with Health & Safety requirements.

We hope that this information will be of interest to you and trust that we will be able to assist you in your future projects. This website demonstrate projects we have undertaken recently.

An association of limestone and sandstone roofing slate producers with an excellent website which provides guidance on all aspects of stone roofing.

The British Isles have a great variety of roof types. They are especially rich in slating materials ranging from metamorphic schists and slates to sandstones and limestones. There is also a wide range of slating styles demonstrating how slaters coped with often intractable materials and severe weather to produce weather-tight and durable roofs.

These materials and techniques make a huge contribution to the historic landscape. They are as prominent in the cities, towns, villages and countryside as any other built element but are frequently misunderstood and poorly conserved so that vernacular details and techniques are discarded and replaced with alien materials and inappropriate modern details. This need not happen. With care and forethought they can be saved.

Stonehealth is a UK based company offering products and consultancy for sensitive stonework restoration and conservation.

Stonehealth was set up by Brian Crowe in the 1980s as a supplier to the building, conservation and restoration trades with ethical and reliable products. One of our first products was the revolutionary JOS system which is now replaced by the more effective TORC system. TORC is hugely effective in removing carbon sulphation, limescale, cementitious and lime-based paints.

We are also responsible for the DOFF system, which removes most paints and other coatings and biological growth without the need to use a biocide.

We supply a wide range of other effective stone cleaning and repair products including ‘safe to use’ chemicals. For example, our Cleanfilm product is used for internal cleaning without the use of water and we also offer stone and brick repair materials and poultices for stain removal.

Storm Windows is a family-run company, with 20 years’ experience specialising in the manufacture and installation of custom-made secondary glazing for historic, period and listed properties nationwide.

Our skilled team are trusted by conservationists, architects and homeowners across the UK to help preserve original and feature windows, however unusual or out of shape they may be.

Our glazing will ensure you reap the rewards of modern glazing with a warmer, quieter and more energy efficient home whilst preserving the character of your property.

We recognise the increasing pressure on listed property owners to meet tighter planning regulations, along with ever-increasing conservation regulations and requirements, which is why our secondary glazing is even more important.

Our talented team of craftmen manufacture each individual product and we are able to make units which are out-of-square, shaped, arched or curved, and suitable for many different types of windows, including sash, casement and York sliders.

We aim to continue to evolve secondary glazing to be an integral part of your historic property whilst conserving the character of your home.
