At Priory Heritage we are passionate about the preservation of historic buildings and believe in a future for all listed and historic buildings.

We support Historic England’s ‘Constructive Conservation’ approach to maintain our ancient buildings but on occasion allow them to change to develop alongside modern needs.

After carefully evaluating significance for each structure we ensure any changes are undertaken sensitively and with consideration for preserving the best of what has been created by previous generations. We believe alterations and repairs should always be done to the best of our ability and provided our work is of the best quality we should not be ashamed of the contribution our generation makes to the history of English Architecture.

Inspired by the role Great Britain played in the First World War, Harkness wished the funds to be used for some of the UK’s ‘more urgent needs’. Such a brief would be unusual today but over the years it has given the Trustees the flexibility to fund charities that address such ‘urgent needs’ or the UK’s future wellbeing. Currently the Pilgrim Trust has two grant-making programmes that focus on preserving the UK’s heritage and catalysing social change through which it awards grants of circa £3 million a year.

Our Preservation and Scholarship fund aims to preserve the fabric of historically important buildings and to conserve significant collections and artefacts. We want present and future generations to enjoy the rich and diverse heritage found throughout the UK. Find out more here.

Our Social Change fund aims to support the life chances and wellbeing of vulnerable people in the UK. After a strategic review in 2020, we have announced our new funding programme: Young Women and Mental Health PLUS. The programme aims to help improve the mental health of young women (16-25) in the UK through increasing their access to high quality, age and gender specific mental health services.

The Pilgrim Trust gives grants for:

- Preservation of and repairs to historic buildings and architectural features - special consideration is given to projects that give new use to buildings of out-standing architectural or historic importance;
Conservation of monuments or structures that are important to their surrounding, including buildings designed for public performance.

- Places of Worship: a block grant is made to the Historic Churches Preservation Trust, the Council for the Care of Churches and the Scottish Churches Architectural Heritage Trust. The Trust does not normally make grants direct to historic churches, other than in Northern Ireland. To apply under our block grant allocation scheme please contact the relevant administering organisation directly.

It is our standard of service and quality of work in achieving our clients objectives which has seen our organisation evolve into one of the most highly revered specialist contractors being entrusted to conserve and repair some of our nations monuments including Bayham Old Abbey and the Archbishop’s Palace along with various properties and structures owned by the National Trust and Historic England.

These high standards have seen the company shortlisted for Historic England’s Angel Awards, RICS awards and runner-up in the King of Prussia Gold Award 2015, together with numerous commendations.

Picreator was founded in 1967, by the late John and Melanie Lawson who ran the Company from 1967 till 2015.
One the first companies of its kind in the world, it was set up to supply professional users with small quantities of products needed to restore and preserve all types of fine-art objects and surfaces, from paper to stone.

The range of products that we now manufacture includes the world-renowned RENAISSANCE WAX which was developed in the laboratories of the British Museum and is specified and used to preserve all types of objects in the museum and historic collection. Picreator is often consulted by architects and other specifying authorities who wish to use its products in the cleaning and maintenance of both interior and exterior surfaces.

The first stage of any restoration project is usually cleaning of surfaces to assess the extent of damage. Safe cleaning, with professionally-approved products, is vital to avoid immediate harm or creation of long-term conservation problems.

In 1984 Picreator was honoured to be granted a Royal Warrant by Her Majesty The Queen as “supplier of products for restoration and conservation”. Our products are frequently in use by restorers at various Royal residences to preserve interior objects and surfaces as well as exterior items such as sculptures in the gardens.

The business continues to grow under the directorship of Michelle Burns, John and Melanie’s daughter, who has worked in the Company since the early 1990’s. Picreator is committed to providing the finest restoration and conservation products with a stringent quality control process. We are happy to deal personally with any technical issues that clients may have, to ensure that the most benefit is gained from the use of our products.

As we continue to expand, we are constantly amazed by new application ideas for our products. The popularity of social media sites has helped spread the word as people demonstrate the use of our products through videos and blogs. The diversity of uses for our products, in particular for Renaissance wax, continues to grow and we frequently hear from satisfied users who have used the products successfully on a variety of items.

First awarded in 1993, the Philip Webb Award sets architects in the early stages of their career a demanding but exciting dual conservation and design challenge.

The brief is to devise a scheme which sympathetically revitalises a historic building for reuse through careful repair of existing fabric and a significant element of new construction in a contemporary design. It’s a unique opportunity for those interested in sustainability, the reuse of old buildings and in developing experience in conservation practice to engage with the SPAB Approach and showcase their skills. The competition is open to recent Part II graduates and current Part II students from Schools of Architecture in the UK and Ireland.

Philip Webb Award 2022

Entries for the next Philip Webb Award open 18 July 2022. Download the Notes for Entrants to find out more. More detailed information about eligibility and how to enter will be available here in the new year.

Philip Hughes Associates was founded in 1982 and is dedicated to the repair and conservation of historic buildings. The practice has grown gradually and employs both architects and surveyors with a partnership being formed from April 2019. The team is highly motivated and committed to providing clients with an individual service whilst striving for excellence in the care of historic buildings.

Work undertaken by the practice predominantly involves the analysis, maintenance, repair and conservation of historic buildings including the preparation of reports on the condition of buildings and investigation of specific defects. Projects regularly involve elements of new design - these are carefully managed to respect the historic setting and fabric of the existing building. The practice has a particular interest in sustainability, reuse and working with traditional materials to minimise environmental impact.

The philosophy of repair adopted by the practice is in line with the principles of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Every effort is made to retain and conserve historic fabric. Repairs are undertaken using traditional techniques, although modern conservation systems are not precluded.

The whole PHA team are deeply committed to the conservation of the historic environment. Two members of the practice are former SPAB scholars and four others have post graduate diplomas in conservation. Two members of the practice have previously worked for National Amenity Societies and all have membership of a range of societies and organisations related to historic building conservation, including voluntary roles for a number of societies and trusts.

Projects range from structural repairs of small agricultural buildings to highly specialist conservation work on large country houses and churches. Most projects involve preparation of condition reports, agreement of phased programmes of work, preparation of proposals (often including elements of new design), specification, tendering, contract administration and budgetary control.

Clients include The National Trust, English Heritage, The Churches Conservation Trust, Building Preservation Trusts, Councils and PCCs as well as many private clients.

PastMap lets you view information about the archaeology, architecture and landscapes of Scotland on one single map. It is managed by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) along with partners from local government and archaeological curators, and holds data from a growing number of other sources.

You can look at different layers, such as local authority Historic Environment Records (HERs), or Listed Building data from HES. You can choose to display layers on a map or aerial photograph and you can turn the layers on or off. Use the search or zoom tools to explore the map and delve into historic sites across Scotland.

When you find a site of interest – like a standing stone, a castle or a designed landscape – click on it to show more detail in the sidebar. Select a group of objects by drawing a shape or circle around them. Once you have made your selection, you can download a report of up to 1,000 records to view later.

PastMap is intended to be used as a portal, leading to more detailed information held by HES and our partners, and is not designed for use by professional contractors in the local authority planning process.

Please note that local HER records contain much more detailed and more up to date information than is currently available here. Please contact the relevant authority direct for all planning matters or queries relating to their records: see the 'HER Participation' link below for details.
