The major activities of the Institute are:

Monthly lectures - Lectures take place from October to May and are held at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London. These are given by visiting speakers on recent research, current archaeological projects and new discoveries. Lectures are filmed and available to members on our website afterwards. The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) is the professional body for chartered architects in Northern Ireland with c.900 members.

It was established in 1901 and then its objectives included the general advancement of architecture and the promotion and maintenance of a high standard of qualification in the profession, both of which are every bit as relevant today.

A direct alliance was formed with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1925 and the RSUA continues to act for the RIBA in Northern Ireland.

The RSUA is committed to a comprehensive continuing professional development strategy and is a vital information network for architects providing a support service on a wide range of issues including contract and legal matters, professional indemnity, changes in planning law, building regulations and government legislation.

Rupert Harris Conservation was established in 1982 and since then we have built a reputation as the leading Conservators of metalwork and sculpture in Europe. Our work covers the full spectrum of objects from jewellery to monumental sculpture, and from the seemingly mundane and utilitarian to the most valuable and fine.

We have a highly skilled and dedicated team of conservators with extensive experience in the conservation of works of art in metal and other media. From our studios in east London we work on projects anywhere in the country and internationally.

Rupert Harris is a PACR Accredited Conservator-Restorer, a member of ICON and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Our company has been awarded SSIP accreditation from Alcumus SafeContractor for achieving excellence in health and safety in the workplace.

We work within a broadly defined international code of conservation ethics. We adhere to the principal that conservation is the safeguarding of cultural property for the future, by the prevention of deterioration, with the most minimal intervention possible to the object. Our primary responsibility is to the objects on which we work or for which we have a duty of care.

In 1982 we were appointed Metalwork Conservation Advisor to the National Trust. We therefore have responsibility for the conservation and care of all metalwork within the National Trust's collections. Additionally, in 2003 we were appointed Architectural Metalwork Consultant to English Heritage, and we also act as consultants to many other national institutions, architects and private collectors.

Other clients include the Royal Household and Historic Royal Palaces, as well as most major public museums, contemporary art galleries, city councils, architects, art dealers, auction houses and private collectors.

It is our intention to expand this website to provide detailed, free information to students and all those in the conservation community and other interested parties. We have already installed a searchable glossary of technical terms, and additional information pages on the conservation of lead sculpture, and general recommendations for further reading. If you have any suggestions for improvements to our site, please email us.

Churches with round towers are unusual: they are found mostly in East Anglia.

The Round Tower Churches Society (RTCS) was established in 1973 to help preserve these churches and to explore their origins and history. There are 186 in England including those in a semi-ruinous condition and visible remnants of fallen towers. All are in East Anglia except for three in Sussex and two in Berkshire. Norfolk has 131, Suffolk 41, Essex seven and two in Cambridgeshire, according to the leading architect and authority on round tower churches, Stephen Hart.

Most are medieval, dating from the 11th to the 14th centuries. Some pre-date the Norman Conquest.

In the past 47 years, the Society has made grants of over £250,000 to help many of the English round tower churches. As a registered charity, the members subscriptions and valued legacies are greatly appreciated.

Support the Society and enable us to continue to provide grants for these churches.

Join yourself or give a year’s membership to a friend – go to Society. For information about recent grants and work in churches visit Grants.

Rose of Jericho was founded in the late 1980s in the period immediately after the ‘lime method', developed by Eve and Robert Baker, was employed so successfully for the repair and conservation of the figure sculptures on the West Front of Wells Cathedral.

These were exciting times, born of the recognition that non-permeable mortars, plasters and paints were inappropriate for, and indeed often accelerated the decay of our built heritage.

The use of lime was a near-forgotten practice, as cement mortars, gypsum plasters and non-breathable emulsion paints had become the norm. Building construction books and courses only mentioned lime as a workability additive for cement mortars.

This had to change !

Roger Mears Architects believes that architecture is the key to enhancing our clients’ experience of daily life.

Our philosophy is to create beautifully crafted buildings that reflect our clients’ styles and personalities, within an historic context. Our work is guided by SPAB principles, with a focus on conservation and sustainability –caring for traditional buildings using a modern approach.

Each project is unique with its own story of its journey through time. We help uncover each building’s distinctive features, which determines careful and meticulous repair. Where required, we add to the narrative of the building by designing new features, additions and extensions derived from the original details, but in a 21st- century idiom. Each repair is honest in detail, and each addition is designed to ensure that the building is enjoyed by another new generation.

A selection of our work from our 35 year history is displayed in the Projects section, with some shown below.

Hanslip & Company Ltd is an RIBA Chartered Practice, here to help with every aspect of historic buildings: condition surveys, repairs, alterations, re-ordering schemes, new build, heritage consultancy and advice, reports, co-ordinating other consultants and trades, compiling and assisting in grant schemes, and any issues that arise from using a historic and community hub.

Hanslip & Co was formed as HMDW Architects in 2007 through the merger of Russell Hanslip Associates and CMA Architects. Both practices were founded in the early 1980s and have built up similar expertise in working with church and community clients on projects for new buildings, extensions and alterations to existing buildings, and repair and restoration of Listed buildings. Projects range in value up to £6 million, and are located throughout London and the South East of England.

Much experience has been gained in most areas of conservation and restoration of Grade 2, 2* and 1 Listed Buildings, the oldest of which dates from 1086, the Chichester Office itself. Conservation knowledge has been gained partly through specialised courses and partly by extensive experience. Members of the practice are on the AABC (Architects Accredited in Building Conservation) Register and RIBA Conservation Register.
