PAS is Scotland’s leading place and active citizenship charity. We support a planning system that is inclusive, positive and innovative, where individuals and communities help shape the future of their place. We are a volunteer-led organisation supported by a network of over 400 specialist volunteers, including professionals from across the built environment sector. We have continuously held Investing in Volunteers status since 2008. Find out more about PAS here.

Who we help - We help individuals and community organisations to get involved in decision-making in the planning system in an impartial, open and inclusive way. We provide skills training and support for community groups, planners, elected members and public bodies. In particular, we work to engage children and young people in their places and offer support to seldom-heard groups who often cannot readily engage in the planning system.

What we do - We help people to understand and influence the place where they live by providing impartial advice, skills training and supporting communities to develop and deliver their own aspirations for their place. We offer a free, impartial and confidential planning advice service, provided by our specialist volunteers, all of whom are chartered planners. Find out how to submit your enquiry.

How to get involved - For free, impartial and confidential advice on planning issues, please submit an enquiry through our Advice Service. To find out more, visit the blog or projects page. If you’re a community group or public body and would like to find out more about how we could assist you, please get in touch.

The Open Spaces Society is Britain’s oldest national conservation body, founded in 1865.

- We campaign for stronger protection and opportunities for everyone to enjoy commons, greens and paths.
- We defend open spaces against loss and pressures from development.
- We assist local communities so that they can safeguard their green spaces for future generations to enjoy.

The Open Spaces Society was founded in 1865 as the Commons Preservation Society.* It is Britain’s oldest national conservation body. Its founders and early members included John Stuart Mill, Lord Eversley, Sir Robert Hunter and Octavia Hill. The last two founded the National Trust in 1895 along with Canon Rawnsley.

Lord Eversley, as George Lefevre, was a Liberal MP and became a junior minister at the Board of Trade in Gladstone’s government. He held a variety of posts including Commissioner of Works. He opened Hampton Court Park, Kew Gardens and Regent’s Park to the public.

Over the last century the society has preserved commons for the enjoyment of the public. It has also been active in protecting the historical and vital rights-of-way network through England and Wales.

Our early successes included saving Hampstead Heath from gravel extraction, Epping Forest, Wimbledon Common, Ashdown Forest and the Malvern Hills, among many other places.

After both world wars the society’s difficult task was to reinstate much common land which had been used for defence and food production.

In the late 1960s, following the enactment of the Commons Registration Act 1965, we worked hard to register common land and common rights, in the far-too-short three years allowed by the act. Many commons were lost through failure to register them.

Much of our work is about the preservation and creation of public paths – footpaths was included in the society’s title after it amalgamated with the National Footpaths Preservation Society in 1899. Before the introduction of official maps of public paths in the early 1950s, the public did not know where the paths were. We helped to campaign for paths to be shown on Ordnance Survey maps.

After several changes of name, the society is now known formally as the Open Spaces Society. Today the Society has its headquarters in the attractive town of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. It has over 2,300 members throughout England and Wales.

Our principal work includes helping our members protect their local common land, town and village greens, open spaces and public paths, and answering their queries. We advise the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and National Assembly for Wales on applications for works on common land, and we are notified by local authorities whenever there is a proposal to alter the route of a public right of way. We campaign for changes in legislation to protect paths and spaces.

We have always been at the forefront of the campaigns to protect common land. In 1986 the Common Land Forum, comprising all the interests in common land, recommended that there should be a public right to walk on all commons coupled with management of the land. (All commons have a landowner, ranging from a public body to a private individual.)

The then government backed the forum’s proposals for legislation and promised to introduce such a law – but it broke the promise. More than a decade later, we won the right to walk on all those commons which previously had no access, subject to certain restrictions, under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

There is a lot for a small society like ours to do, but we are persistent in our defence of your rights to enjoy the countryside and towns. We greatly appreciate the support of our members.

Lisa Oestreicher MA MSc is an independent paint analyst with over 20 years’ experience in the field of architectural paint research.

Having studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture and the Architectural Association she worked for Westminster City Council as a Senior Conservation Officer before taking the opportunity to specialise further. In 1994 she began two years of training in architectural paint research with the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal College of Art. In 1997 she established her consultancy practice in Bath, England.

The Bath studio combines analytical expertise with specialties in architectural research and listed building legislation. Lisa works with clients to formulate a brief which will meet their needs in the most cost-effective manner. Detailed reports outlining the analytical findings are produced and if required a colour palette and specification for redecoration can be supplied. By endeavouring to understand the needs of the client, and through effective communication of the historical and analytical findings, successful project outcomes are ensured.

The practice has had the opportunity to work on a wide breadth of projects ranging from royal palaces to civic buildings in the UK and abroad. Past projects include Kensington Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, William Morris’s Red House, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Knole, Hampton Court Palace, Ham House, the Royal Courts of Justice, Woburn Abbey, Bristol Old Vic Theatre and Hong Kong Central Police Station. Clients include the National Trust, English Heritage, Historic Royal Palaces, CADW, the House of Lords and several national museums, as well as many private property owners.

Lisa Oestreicher has also written articles on architectural paint research and historic interiors for conservation publications, advised museums on exhibition content and shared her knowledge on several televised programmes.

Lisa Oestreicher sits on the committee of The Institute of Conservation (ICON), Historic Interiors Group.

We are a small company specialising in the repair and restoration of listed and historical buildings and associated structures. We have acquired an award winning reputation for attention to detail and the application of good old fashioned hand skills. These skills cannot be acquired overnight, and are not something anyone can become proficient in, but here within our small company you will find a rich and growing range of abilities.

The work we undertake cannot be rushed, so we will not be rushed; quality work takes time so we will take our time. We have no interest in anything other than producing the very best work we are capable of achieving. This is our statement and one you can rely on.

Our clients inevitably share our enthusiasm for historical buildings, it’s a constant delight to us to be invited to use our skills and knowledge in ensuring that their home or other buildings, that are often centuries old, will be around long into the future for other generations to enjoy.

Our clients are often the driving force that enables us to keep the above statement alive; if you share in this belief and think we can help with your project then please feel free to contact us.

I invite you to explore our little website and hope you find its content interesting and informative. Within its pages you will find some short articles that I hope convey some of the more common processes often encountered in what we do.

As an architect, I’m passionate about old buildings and helping their owners keep them fit for modern living and modern use. I know what it’s like for small congregations to try to keep up with maintaining their church buildings without forgetting their mission – and I love to be involved with them. I’m also concerned about green issues and one of my new projects is the design and build of a small private chapel in straw‐bale construction with a reciprocal framed roof. I’ve also got a few projects and potential projects in London – all small‐scale extensions for homeowners on a budget.

Setting up on my own at the age when many people retire is a new adventure. I’ve worked with my late husband in our partnership Robert and Anne Netherwood, done an 8‐year stint with him setting up and running the Home Advisory Service in Dodoma Tanzania, and helped him set up the practice again when we returned to the UK. Changing hats, I was ordained in 1991 and spent 16 years looking after three very rural parishes in North Shropshire. I retired from the parishes when Rob was diagnosed with cancer, and helped him set up Greenspace Architects Ltd with Kevin Slack. I worked freelance for Greenspace until 2015, and now I have my own Chartered Practice – working from home

I’ve been very lucky to have Andy Hales helping me as a freelance assistant for three years until April 2019. Andy recently completed his RIBA Part 2 studies at the College of Alternative Technology in Machynlleth and has taught me a great deal about straw bale construction, hemp-crete insulation and other environmentally friendly building techniques.

I’m a member of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and the Green Register, and I’m on the RIBA Conservation Register. In December 2017 I received accreditation from the RIBA as a Conservation Architect.

We are a highly motivated team producing designs which balance the conflicting requirements of brief, location, budget and planning restrictions, often working within tight restraints and within an historical context. We aim to work in a close partnership with enthusiastic clients, skilled craftspeople, approving authorities and other consultants to produce the highest standards of design informed by the principles of sustainability.

Nicholas Jacob Architects was formed in 1996 and are a RIBA Chartered practice. The key personnel are committed to the day to day running of the practice and take an active role in all projects. We are fortunate to have a loyal and experienced team together with an established client base allowing us to respond to projects of differing sizes and complexities across the East of England, London and South East England.

Our goal is always to meet our clients’ particular needs and we have demonstrated our capabilities time and again. We combine an award-winning creative approach with technical expertise to devise cost-effective, sustainable solutions which often balance the conflicting requirements of the brief, location, budget and planning restrictions, working within tight restraints and sometimes within a historical context. This design role extends from the original conception of ideas, through the planning process, to project implementation and architectural or interior management.

It is not unusual for us to work with specialist consultants. We have a huge network of contacts – highly experienced experts across a truly diverse range of fields. This helps us develop a true multidisciplinary service and achieve the quality results our clients should expect. As Chartered Architects we continue the tradition of being the project lead, to ensure that no level of the design is compromised.

Nicholas Jacob Architects offer our clients a full range of architectural services. These services, detailed below, are complimented by over 20 years of practice in the Eastern region from an experienced team of architects, technologists and technicians.

Nick Cox Architects was established in 2006 and is based just north of Oxford. The practice specialises in the repair and conservation of historic buildings and the design of new buildings in a historic context. The conservation philosophy of the practice is grounded in developing a proper understanding of the historic fabric and carrying out thoughtful repairs and conservation.

The practice’s approach to new design is rooted in an understanding of materials and their behaviour over time – knowledge of which principally derives from work on historic buildings. Using traditional materials and methods is often not only sustainable but, when combined, contemporary materials and design can be visually exciting for users of the building.

The practice comprises eight Architects, a fully qualified Architectural Technician and a PA and Practice Manager. The practice undertakes a diverse range of projects, varying from ecclesiastical work to residential refurbishment and the conservation of stately homes and landscape buildings. In addition to striving for excellence in conservation work, the practice has experience in a variety of projects that combine new architectural design with, and adjacent to, historic buildings.

Quality Assurance - As a practice we value high quality in the design and execution of our work. This runs from early feasibility stages through to project completion.

Sustainable Design - Designs evolve with the site and context always in mind and we encourage the use of sustainable alternatives and methods where appropriate to do so. The practice is a member of The Green Register.

A commitment to training and engagement opportunities - The practice is committed to promoting educational opportunities internally as well as to external groups and societies (including the SPAB, Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society, RIBA Mentoring Scheme)

At Norgrove we undertake the repair and rebuilding of all early periods of glasswork, with attention to the replacement of glass only where necessary, with second-hand, or more usually, new handmade mouthblown glasses to match originals. We specialize in the repair of painted and stained glass damaged by accident or vandalism. Our blacksmith will repair existing ferramenta and casements, make facsimiles in wrought iron or stainless steel, and make subtle window guards in stainless steel, powder coated matt black, to protect important glass. We have a close relationship with one of the finest producers of handmade glass in Europe, and have in the recent past manufactured hand made glass to replicate broad glass of the mid 17th C for the National Trust.

Much of our work is the care and restoration of plain glazing, from the 16th C to the 19th C. In this we follow the SPAB philosophy. Leatharby architectural and craft students visit our workshops as part of their courses. We are glaziers to Warwick Castle, Lichfield and Hereford Cathedrals, Compton Wynyates and others. The National Trust and Landmark Trusts are perhaps our largest secular clients. We are approved by English Heritage for the conservation of both plain and early, painted glass, - we are also pleased to offer designs for newly - commissioned stained glass windows. These are designed, painted and fired completely in our own workshops.

We are a small firm, comprising six tradesmen, of whom three are glass painters, with the flexibility and specialist knowledge to provide the product and service historic buildings merit. We have worked on properties for the most sensitive of clients - our personnel have been, and are, vetted for any potentially delicate situation.

We can advise you at any time, without obligation, please feel free to ask.
