Nigel Hilliard’s family have long been connected with wood carving, spanning a period of three centuries, where knowledge, skills and disciplines have passed from one generation to another.

For the last twenty five years, Nigel, who was taught by his father Terence Hilliard has been reproducing picture frames and decorative furniture as well as restoring some of the finest antique furniture.

Much of this work requires gilding and often necessitates simulating a period finish. This is achieved using a variety of methods and techniques that have evolved and developed over the years.

Many of the frames he has worked on are displayed in museums and private collections worldwide surrounding paintings by celebrated artists, including, Rubens, Canaletto, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Monet and Picasso. Nigel’s work includes restoring particular items from the Carlton House trophy collection for Windsor Castle and carvings for Spencer House, as well as providing a high quality service to art and antique dealers, private collectors and those whose interests include joinery, cabinet making, architectural and interior design.

Paul Ferguson established the Workshop in 1978 after five years studying design at art school followed by a further five years training as a wood carver in the West End of London at the Paul Levi Studio, picture framer extraordinaire, under the guidance of master carver Edward Desave. In 2012 the Workshop became incorporated as Fine Wood Carving & Gilding Ltd.

Paul undertakes extensive restoration/conservation work that entails conservation reports, analysis, proposed treatments, and method statements followed by final reports including photographs of works during progress.

New projects are also welcomed. The knowledge gained on the numerous and varied projects completed over the years enables the Workshop to offer new works to the highest standard, whether it be a traditional design or a totally new concept. Consultation followed by sketches and CAD drawings being produced as necessary.

Contracts have been carried out for a wide variety of clients, ranging from royal palaces, stately homes, government buildings and public museums to architects, antique dealers, interior designers and private individuals.

The Worshipful Company of Masons is number 30 in the order of precedence of the Ancient Livery Companies of the City of London, as set by the Aldermen of the City in 1515. Today there are over 110 and the number continues to grow. The focus of our Livery Company is to preserve and encourage the use of natural stone in the built environment. This includes supporting the training of craftsmen as well as the preservation and appreciation of iconic historic stone buildings.

Happily stonemasonry is still practiced today and the Worshipful Company of Masons is at the forefront of supporting the craft in education and preservation. Our membership includes professionals from the construction and property, specialists in stonemasonry as well as those with connections to or interest in the City and its national and international importance. Membership is made up Liverymen, Freemen and Yeoman Masons.

Our history - Our Company was formed with the object of regulating the craft of stonemasonry so that standards could be properly maintained and rewarded. The earliest available records of regulation from the Court of Aldermen are dated 1356.

In 1472 a Grant of Arms was received under Letters Patent but it was not until 1677 that the Company was formally incorporated by Royal Charter under the seal of King Charles II which gave it authority to control the work of masons in the Cities of London and Westminster and seven miles around. This was a necessary power in order to control the influx of provincial stonemasons assisting in the rebuilding of the capital following the Great Fire in 1666 and to enable the maintenance of strict standards, although governance was never quite as tight again.

Since then members of the Company have been involved in the creation and preservation of the majority of iconic stone buildings and structures across these Cities and nationwide.

Joshua and Edward Marshall erected Temple Bar in 1673, the barrier from where trade was officially regulated into the City. Four years later Thomas Strong laid the foundation stone of the new St Paul’s Cathedral and his brother Edward laid the last stone of the building’s lantern in 1708. Both Marshalls and Strongs were Master Masons among a number of other prominent members of the Company who worked on the City’s most beautiful monuments under Sir Christopher Wren. Between 1670 and 1718 at least 8 individuals actively involved in the construction of St Paul’s became Masters of the Masons’ Company.

Martin Ashley Architects provides a full range of architectural and surveying services to assist owners, occupiers and custodians of historic buildings and estates towards their conservation, repair, adaption, alteration, change and development for ongoing beneficial use in the 21st Century.

The range of buildings within our portfolio has allowed us to develop significant expertise in historic building conservation design and techniques over many years. At Buckingham Palace, for example, our experience of conserving historic stonework and care in sourcing new materials addressed a problem that had been unresolved for over 150 years. At Hampton Court, the Anne Boleyn Gates show how we can work with a range of materials – in this case timber – to introduce beautiful new features within important historic settings. Meanwhile The Canons’ Cloister shows how a forensic approach to building conservation has restored important Medieval buildings and reversed a series of damaging interventions.

We enjoy sharing our expertise with project partners and others. On site we take great pride in encouraging close collaboration with others such as conservationists and specialist trades, an approach that allows project partners to learn from each other and bring their best to each project. We are also anxious to do what we can to ensure that historic building conservation skills and knowledge are passed down, and therefore give talks and lectures to fellow professionals and other interested groups, host study visits to our projects for trainee architects, surveyors and conservationists, and share our expertise through articles in journals and magazines.

‘As someone who both lives and works in the Canons’ Cloister I know that Martin Ashley Architects’ refurbishment was undertaken with great skill as well as consummate and sensitive care, providing the perfect balance of modern living in a place of historic interest and importance.’

Charlotte Manley LVO OBE, Chapter Clerk, St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle

‘Martin Ashley Architects have worked alongside Historic Royal Palaces for several years to ensure a future for some of Britain’s most significant buildings. At Hampton Court Palace and Kew the practice continues to bring a responsible, scholarly and collaborative approach to historic building conservation.’

Patricia Les, Surveyor of the Fabric & Head of Building Conservation at Historic Royal Palaces

‘We consider Martin Ashley Architects to be one of the most professional and approachable practices in their field. Clients and contractors alike admire their attention to detail, innovative thinking and excellent back office support. Their collaborative approach also makes for successful and enjoyable working relationships.’

The Marsh Charitable Trust was founded in 1981 with the sum of £75,000 by its current Chairman, Mr Brian Marsh OBE. His aim was to create a sustainable way to give something back to society, by supporting the organisations and people who are making a difference, as best he could.

The Trust supports around 350 charities every year through the Grants Programme and gives around 80 different Awards to individuals and groups from across the charity sector, who make a difference to a cause that they believe in.

The Trust’s activities are financed by income derived from its investment portfolio and it does not accept any public donations.

Under the direction of Malcolm Fryer, the experience of the practice ranges from careful building repairs through to large scale adaptive re-use and master-planning projects.

Our design philosophy is one of seeking creative and flexible yet robust solutions, which respect the significance of existing buildings and their contexts whilst adding a layer of contemporary distinction. The practice seeks to make buildings sustainable in the widest sense, reflecting the needs of users socially and economically as well as environmentally. A ‘Long Life, Loose Fit’ approach is central to this challenge.

The practice has a strong track record of obtaining planning and listed building consents for complex and ambitious historic building projects, and for securing funding sources. Malcolm Fryer has been responsible for designing and delivering award winning buildings for a wide range of private, institutional and ecclesiastical clients.

Maintain our Heritage is a group of building conservation campaigners, academics and others who first came together in 1997, having all realised how UK building conservation had become focussed on rescuing historic buildings in advance states of decay, rather than preventing them from decay through appropriate and timely maintenance.

We drew inspiration from the Dutch Monumentenwacht, which – by total contrast – has for nearly 50 years operated teams of operatives clearing out the gutters of historic buildings and doing immediate minor repairs such as replacing cracked or slipped roof tiles.
Early Days

In 2002, we set up a pilot scheme in Bath, Somerset, to test whether a similar service could be provided in the UK. More information on this is on a separate page here. This concluded that there were no technical obstacles to setting up such a service here, but there were significant financial barriers.

The pilot scheme proved popular with local churches and led directly to the creation of our GutterClear scheme with the Church of England Diocese of Gloucester.

Putting it off: Research - Between 2003 and 2006, we led a collaborative research programme funded by the Department of Trade & Industry. The results are available online here and have informed our thinking ever since.

Corporate Status - Maintain our Heritage is a not-for- profit company, limited by guarantee, registered in England number no 3983254
