The Landscape Institute (LI) is the chartered body for the landscape profession. It is an educational charity that promotes the art and science of landscape practice. The LI’s aim, through the work of its members is to protect, conserve and enhance the natural and built environment for the public benefit. The LI provides a professional home for all landscape practitioners including landscape scientists, landscape planners, landscape architects, landscape managers and urban designers.

Supporting landscape practitioners - The landscape profession is as diverse and dynamic as the landscapes they work on, but our focus stays the same: to support and represent all landscape practitioners.

We support our members through advocacy programmes, events and numerous networking activities, many of which are organised through our branches across the UK. Our professional development programme helps our members achieve the highest standards in landscape practice. Chartered membership of the Landscape Institute (CMLI) is only awarded to those who reach the highest standards in landscape education and practice. CMLI is a mark of excellence that tells prospective clients and employers that a landscape practitioner is the best in their field.
Representing landscape professionals

We work with governments to ensure the voice of landscape professionals is heard on a range of policy issues.

We represent landscape professionals and want landscape to be at the top of the agenda when national and devolved governments are developing initiatives and strategies. We are the voice of the profession on topics such as housing, flooding, public health, sustainability, farming and much more.

Promoting landscape practice - We champion the great work done by landscape practitioners through the press, broadcast and digital media along with our events and exhibitions. Our case studies library is a collection of contemporary landscape projects ranging from global-scale projects like Olympic parks through to neighbourhood schemes.

The LI Awards - One of the biggest events in the landscape industry is our annual awards, which celebrate the scale and scope of UK and international landscape practice.

Protecting the natural and built environment - As an educational charity, we support current thinking and actions that promote the use of landscape for the benefit of the public. For instance, we welcome initiatives that promote public health, sustainability, and tackle climate change. But our focus stays the same: to conserve and enhance the natural and built environment for the public benefit. We support landscape practice that creates thriving communities through the design and management of inspirational places. The skills of landscape practitioners, across environmental, planning, management and design, can enhance the quality of human life. For instance, the work of our members can reduce air and noise pollution, increase the profitability and sustainability of places – and lead to more relaxing and healthier spaces to enjoy.

Library and archive - The LI’s library and archive collection was donated to the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) at the University of Reading in 2013. The landscape collections at MERL include the drawings and professional papers of leading landscape practitioners such as urban designer Michael Brown, Syliva Crowe and Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe. The collection also houses sketches, drawings and illustrations by artist and landscape architect Peter Shepheard.

Founded in 1965, The Landmark Trust is one of Britain's leading building conservation charities.

With the help of our supporters, we save historic buildings in danger of being lost forever. We sensitively restore such 'Landmarks' and offer them a new future by making them available to everyone for self-catering holidays. The lettings income from the 200 extraordinary buildings in our care supports their maintenance and survival in our landscape, culture and society.

Though they range from the sober to the spectacular, all our buildings are rich in history and atmosphere. They include picturesque pavilions and medieval long-houses, artillery forts and Gothick follies, clan chiefs’ castles and cotton weavers’ cottages, the homes of great writers and the creations of great architects, from Browning to Boswell, from Pugin to Palladio.

Lambs is an established family-owned supplier of fine bricks and natural stone. For five generations, we have been assisting architects, planning and conservation officers, building conservationists, builders, developers, homeowners, and merchants create and restore remarkable buildings.

WHERE TRADITION MEETS TECHNOLOGY- Originally known as WT Lamb, then Lambs Bricks and Arches, today Lambs designs and makes gauged arches, facing bricks and specials at our brickworks in Sussex. In our Sussex quarry we extract natural stone, and design and craft architectural masonry in a number of vernacular finishes.

A SOURCE OF DISTINCTIVE MATERIALS - We are the sole manufacturers of authentic TLB Red Rubbers and Handmade Imperial Rubber Range bricks which are supplied for the restoration of listed buildings and historic properties. We operate the only surviving large quarry for Wealden Sussex Sandstone (also known as Tunbridge Wells Sandstone). And we are the sole suppliers of Port Lime and Port Regent, natural limestones sourced from some of Europe’s finest historic quarries.

COMBINING MANUAL CRAFTSMANSHIP WITH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY - Members of The Guild of Master Craftsmen, we owe the quality of our products to the honed skills of our red masons and stone masons (some of whom are third-generation craftsmen at Lambs). Although some of our tools and techniques date back to the 16th Century, we use the latest technology in our design processes, enabling us to deliver precise working drawings and 3D visualisations.

EXPERTISE RELEVANT TO PROJECTS OF ANY SIZE - We are more than happy to share our knowledge of using traditional and natural materials with you. Whether you need a single brick or stone lintel, or tonnes of a distinctive bricks or stone for a contemporary building, call our sales team to arrange a visit to discuss your options.

Keystone Building and Conservation was founded by Jamie Bransden. After starting in modern construction in 2007, Jamie had his first taste of heritage work in 2008, working on the restoration of a 19th century mill in West Wales, where he learnt about using lime mortars and working with stone. Since then, he has worked on numerous projects , from Gruff Rhys Jones' Trehilyn farm in Pembrokshire which featured on national television, to the restoration of Sydney University in Australia. Over the years he has developed skills and contacts enabling him to provide a complete, competent building service. Evans Conservation is a Kent based company specialising in the conservation of historic buildings. We use traditional skills and materials to conserve our cultural heritage.

Conserving and carrying out repairs to historic buildings requires an in-depth understanding of how the building was originally constructed and an ability to identify and understand the changes which have been made over time. Applying our broad experience and deep expertise to your home we discover and reveal the unique story of your building through time. Our detailed knowledge of traditional methods and materials enables us to specify works and carry out repairs which continue and support the long history of your building and make sure that your chapter in their story is a great one!

Sympathetic Repair – by understanding how your building was originally constructed and of course any subsequent historical repairs we can make sure that the appropriate materials are used and used correctly.

Environmental Controls – the vast majority of ‘problems’ in historic buildings are caused by poor workmanship or use of inappropriate materials which result from a lack of understanding. These problems are easily remedied by understanding how traditional buildings were designed so that the building fabric can be preserved without resorting to chemical treatments.

Continued Support – Our passion for what we do goes beyond just ‘finishing the job’; we take responsibility for the future well-being of your building and our heritage. We aim to leave you confident and comfortable with a deepened understanding of your historic building yet at the same time offer ongoing support, consultancy and maintenance schedules.

‘Much more than just bricks and mortar…
it's a story waiting to be told…’

Part of the thrill of owning an historic building is gradually learning about and discovering the unique story of your home. Bringing our experience, expertise and enthusiasm to the process of joining and assisting you in digging deeper into the uniqueness of your home and its place in our history.

From discovering the more obvious historical features such as structural alterations and historic additions right down to the smaller details of carpenter’s marks, re-used timbers and traditional tool marks every building is full of clues telling it’s own individual story.

2021 was a successful year for the Trust with 38 bells re-located. We would like to express our thanks to all those people who have and continue to help us. Without your help we would not have known about many of the surplus/redundant bells which are being or about to be used once again in other churches.

9th June 2019 - Our “Church index” projects are now downloadable PDF files and no longer individual web pages. They are organised by Country apart from England which is by County.

Information Required: If you know of any surplus or redundant bells (including cases where church closure is likely) please send us an email. We rely on this information to acquire bells using our Bell Rescue Fund.

The art and science of ringing bells in a seemingly endless variety of sequences with a distinct and regular beat has developed over several centuries in the United Kingdom, and is recognised as being distinctly British. The sound of this type of ringing is an established and valued part of our national heritage. The continuation and further development of this unique tradition depends entirely on the use of bells in Church towers. Through ringing of its bells the Church can become a focus of pride for the whole community.

English style bell-ringing is not restricted to the United Kingdom. There are established ringing societies in Africa, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the USA.

For centuries Churches have augmented their peal of bells or installed a peal of bells. Most bells are newly cast, but an increasing number are “recycled” from other churches. The Trust helps Churches acquire surplus or redundant bells which will be hung for English-style bell-ringing.

Julian Harrap Architects LLP is a distinguished medium-sized practice offering a full range of specialist architectural services for the repair and restoration of historic buildings, estates and landscapes, and for the design of extensions and new buildings in historic settings.

Established in 1973, JHA has a team of highly trained architects who promote the philosophy of the practice and share an extensive body of experience. The practice is well known for its consistency of approach and meticulous attention to detail. JHA’s success over 40 years has produced many satisfied clients and has received numerous awards for excellence in design, conservation and craftsmanship.

Philosophy - All projects are approached on the basis of academic research and stylistic understanding. JHA seeks to consolidate earlier work within a framework of aesthetic and architectural ideas unique to each project. JHA accepts no distinction between the design of new buildings or elements and the restoration or repair of historic structures. This emphasis on design applies to everything the practice does, from the smallest building repair to major projects and consultancy services.

Historic buildings work is not simply an archaeological exercise but rather the re-presentation of architecture from earlier generations, encompassing the beautiful accretions of time in a way that is valid for its present day uses. This requires the understanding of a designer and the expertise of a craftsman.

Repair and restoration, together with traditional craftsmanship and 21st century technology, are equally valid responses in their appropriate contexts. JHA’s philosophy is to respect the work of others, whilst acknowledging its own contribution of elements, or buildings, of a contemporary character. This approach enables JHA to work constructively with other professionals and help clients, whether they are institutional, developer, public sector or private individuals, to find ways to capitalize on their asset.

Much of JHA’s work is supported by grant-giving agencies and has been recognised with numerous national and international awards for excellence in design, conservation and craftsmanship since the practice’s inception.

The practice was founded in North Devon by Jonathan in 1986, and in 2004 the practice opened the Taunton office to address the workload in Somerset, Dorset and Gloucestershire.

The conservation of historic sites and buildings has always been a fast moving, intellectually-based discipline requiring particular training in the context of on-going research and developing advice. We have always committed to maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the extensive and evolving application of building conservation.

This is reflected in accreditations that individuals in the practice maintain to demonstrate this commitment and our close collaboration with Historic England, SPAB, Devon Earth Building Association and the Conservation of Traditional Thatch Group etc.

We have recently contributed to Historic England’s current research in Devon Cobbled Paths (with the SPAB), Damp Towers and the cob section of their recent publication on Earth, Brick and Terracotta.

My introduction to the glory of stained glass began whilst visiting Canterbury Cathedral during my time at Canterbury College of Art, which was situated in view of this magnificent Gothic building. Entering the huge vaulted Nave and up into the Choir I was immediately overwhelmed by strength of colour of the windows; powerful flowing imagery and the scale of the series of figures depicting the genealogy of Christ beginning with the finest of all “Adam delving” (1170). This series of windows remain some of the finest examples of western medieval art – from that time I was hooked!

My creative development at Art School (Northampton School of Art and Canterbury College of Art) began through influences of teachers who introduced me particularly to European Art from the pre-Renaissance e.g. frescoes of Giotto and Cimabue. At that time I discovered one of the most moving self-portraits by Rembrandt on an early visit to the National Gallery. Art School also showed me American Abstract Expressionism – Rothko, Pollock, de Kooning; Post-Impressionism (Cezanne). Of course I could not leave out Picasso, Matisse and Chagall who were constants throughout the century, they have all contributed to my own creativity.

Following graduation (Fine Art) I had the opportunity to join the Cathedral Studios and work on these great windows. I spent almost four years studying design; glass painting; the art and craft of this unique visual medium as well as the conservation of these 800-year-old masterpieces.

An early memory is viewing the high level windows “up close” on scaffolding assisting Professor Madeline Caviness as she carried out her research on the stained glass windows for the CVMA volume on “The Windows of Christ Church, Canterbury” later published (1981). This was a huge learning experience, an insight into the quality of these great works and influential in my creative development at that time. The viewing of the glass was, of course, in the context of its part in the fabric of the building. The light source for this Great Church but also its texture, the impurities of blown glass, its kiln fired painted surface and the raw unpainted Caen stone – such harmony!
