Ireland’s industrial heritage is continually being changed or destroyed. There has been a growing public awareness of Ireland’s industrial heritage, as seen in a number of sites which have been restored or conserved by enthusiasts and are now open to the public as tourist and educational attractions. Although there is official recognition of the importance of our industrial heritage, statutory protection is still low, due in the main to a backlog of listing of industrial heritage structures.

The Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland (IHAI) was established in June 1996 to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the many thousands of sites, monuments and items of machinery that together constitute our industrial heritage.

IHAI is a company limited by guarantee and registered in the Republic of Ireland (400431) and is managed by an Executive Committee (Board) made up of individuals (Directors) with a wide range of interests and specialisms in the subject.

IHAI is also registered as a Charitable Body (CHY20523) whose main activity is industrial heritage information and education.

The inauguration of the Society on the 25th September 1947 was a matter of great satisfaction to all concerned, realizing that the advancement in scientific methods both of analysis and production, more than warranted the formation of a professional Society, not only for the free interchange of ideas, but to set a standard for those fully qualified.

That this standard is set very high, is exemplified by the qualifications required of all members to have the ability to specify, design, voice, build, tune and finish an organ of high class, and this qualification has been, and will be most fully maintained.

There is no discrimination against the membership of any individual who is fully qualified. The grades of membership consist of Student, Ordinary Members, Associates, Fellows and Councillors. In line with modern thinking the grade of Companion has been introduced to allow non-organ builders with an interest in organs to attend meetings.

The formation of this professional body has, without doubt, been and advantage not only to the individuals concerned, but to the Craft and our clients generally. The professional status of members of the Society has its obligations and a maintenance of a code of professional conduct is an important factor.

The development of our Society along the above lines is our prime objective, and to achieve this end, by mutual help and interest, meetings are held throughout the country, at which lectures are given on appropriate subjects of interest, visits are made to see and hear the latest developments in organ building, followed by discussions, and generally that all should contribute in every manner possible for the well-being of the Society and the furtherance of its great objects.

Membership of the Society should inspire confidence in the Client that they have chosen well and can look forward to a satisfactory outcome.

Supporting people, places, and prosperity - We carry out vital work on behalf of independent heritage sites, from public affairs and technical guidance, through education and peer-to-peer support, to marketing and public access initiatives.

Policy and public affairs - Historic houses are hubs of culture in the countryside and vibrant small businesses, providing important employment opportunities and leisure experiences in rural communities in all corners of our four nations. They are at the heart of the UK’s world-leading tourism industry – attracting millions of visitors, generating tens of thousands of jobs, supporting communities across the country, and powering the rural economy.

Based in Westminster, our small UK policy team works closely with government, stakeholders, and politicians of all stripes to shape and influence policy for the benefit of heritage, culture and tourism. Historic Houses Scotland works in close partnership with Holyrood and other stakeholders on Scottish policy work, while in Cardiff our part-time Policy Adviser engages with Welsh government, politicians and stakeholders on behalf of Historic Houses in Wales.

We advocate for a fair and practical fiscal and regulatory framework – one that allows independent historic houses and gardens to thrive for the benefit of the nation, without burdening the public purse. We robustly represent our member houses’ interests in policy areas such as taxation, regulation, planning, sustainability, health & wellbeing and tourism. We regularly meet ministers, civil servants, and MPs across parties, and their equivalents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We submit evidence and case studies in response to a range of consultations and reports, to aid policy-making. And we collaborate with colleagues across the heritage and tourism sectors.

Advice and guidance - Independent ownership requires those who care for – and, usually live in – historic houses to take on a bewildering spread of roles, from business CEO or HR manager to conservation specialist, health and safety inspector, planning lawyer or marketing director. Luckily, our expert advisors and professional services sponsors are on hand to offer free technical, commercial, financial and legal advice, both on-demand and through an extensive archive of online resources. Our dedicated Learning Advisory Panel offers guidance on interpretation and on education- and access-related grants.

We run a range of seminars and workshops each year for those who own or manage historic houses, and make those sessions available for viewing online at any time. Tips from the pros are shared alongside the experience of other owners; peer-to-peer support is a key benefit of being a part of the association and is encouraged at regional and national forums as well as training sessions. Our Next Generation group offers a series of events and lectures aimed specifically at those who may one day succeed to a property, to prepare them for what they’re set to take on.

The Historic Houses Foundation (HHF) is a charitable grant-giving foundation which was set up in 2005 as the Country Houses Foundation, changing its name in 2019 following the merger with the Heritage Conservation Trust. The objects of the Foundation are:

- to advance the preservation, for the public benefit, of buildings of sufficient historic or architectural significance or importance to merit preservation together with their gardens and grounds, and
- to protect and augment the amenities and furnishings, and artwork of any such buildings, gardens and grounds.

The Historic Houses Foundation was born out of the Country Houses Association, an Industrial and Provident Society which was formed in 1955 by Admiral Greathed for the purposes of preserving historic buildings for the benefit of the nation.

During its lifetime, the Association acquired nine large country houses, and restored and preserved these until their sale in 2003 and 2004. During their ownership by the Association, all the houses were converted into retirement apartments, with the rental income helping to pay for extensive renovations and repairs. The houses were open to members of the Association and also members of the public.

Following a restructuring of the Association in 2004, all the properties were sold resulting in a substantial surplus. The majority of these funds have been donated to the Country Houses Foundation to ensure that the work of preserving historic buildings continues.

It is the intention of the HHF Trustees that these funds will be used to award substantial grants to the most deserving of qualifying projects

The Historic Religious Buildings Alliance was set up in 2008 and is an independently funded group within the The Heritage Alliance (established in 2002 as Heritage Link). It brings together those working for a secure future for historic religious buildings from across the UK. These include both those buildings which are still open as places of worship and those which are no longer needed for worship, but because of their architectural and historical importance are being cared for and/or reused by charities and volunteers. Membership includes organisations which own or otherwise have a stake in the future of our historic places of worship as well as those organisations which provide support such as Maintain our Heritage. Its membership currently includes members from all major Christian denominations and from the Jewish and Muslim faith groups as well as organisations such as the Historic Chapels Trust and the Churches Conservation Trust.

The HRBA free e-newsletter offers updates on news and events concerning the future of historic religious buildings. Where appropriate, HRBA also provides a communication channel with government for our representative members, on matters affecting historic religious buildings in Great Britain.

The Historic Towns and Villages Forum (HTVF) has over 30 years’ experience in promoting the prosperity and heritage of historic cities, towns and villages. Its work is rooted in the recognised value of heritage assets to social, economic and environmental well-being, and how to successfully manage change.

The HTVF is an independent membership organisation funded from events and membership fees, and sponsorships.

We are delighted that the HRH Prince Charles is our Patron, and that the Herbert Lane Trust is one of our key supporters. The HTVF is based in Kellogg College, Oxford, the largest graduate college in Oxford University, and we share common values by creating and promoting opportunities for lifelong and flexible learning, and working with a wide range of people and their interests.

Recent feedback from our events: “It was really wonderful to take part in the seminar and get so much interesting information on Oxford and its heritage protection”

“It was a really excellent day, very interesting, with some great contributors. Much food for thought…”

"The site tour was the icing on the cake. I am going to sign up for more seminars now. Also good value for money compared to RTPI events."

"I found your fantastic resources and website whilst researching how to create a Neighbourhood Plan...

"I very much appreciate the resources that you have on-line from previous seminars and have found the article about understanding High Street signature types very illuminating."

"Thank you for all you do for the survival of Britain's historic towns and villages."

"Thank you for such an informative, inspiring and encouraging day yesterday. There was such a great variety of information and perspective to absorb and reflect upon, I speak for myself but doubtless also for my colleagues, that I left feeling buoyant and enthusiastic for what we might be able to achieve together."

Huning Decorations is a company specialising in recreating and restoring historic painted decoration. We are experts in colour mixing and work with both traditional paints and modern materials. Our work has included projects for English Heritage and the National Trust as well as in many churches and private houses around the country.

The company is run by Saskia Huning, the daughter of the founders of the company, Wilm and Joy Huning. Wilm Huning’s father founded the company over 100 years ago and both Wilm Huning and his father were Master Decorators in the traditional German Guild system.

One of our strengths is recreating traditional paint effects using modern materials. Working with paint analysis reports, different materials and colours are trialled in our studio to formulate the correct ingredients and working methods.

We are happy to recreate existing schemes using traditional materials or finishes and we are able to hand-mix colours to match on a small or large scale. Our own creative works includes mural painting as well as work with stencils and colour schemes.

Huntley Cartwright was established in 1985 in Oxted, Surrey. Within four years the practice had grown and moved to Caterham, Surrey, where we now have eight partners and employ over 30 staff.

Our team has contributed to many varied projects over the years. We have developed particular expertise working for public and private customers in education, heritage, commercial, cultural and residential sectors as well as public realm and marine markets.

Our staff are our greatest asset and we value the contribution they make. We run an effective training and apprenticeship scheme that leads to graduate and chartered surveyor status. For all staff, there is an active continuing professional development (CPD) programme. Our success is only possible with team work, so we take time to reflect on our efforts away from the working environment and to enjoy each other’s company with regular social and team building events.

Hurst Peirce + Malcolm LLP is one of the longer established structural and civil engineering practices in London, having been founded in 1908 by B. L. Hurst (photograph).

The practice provides a wide range of design and advisory services to clients from the private and public sectors. As a conscious policy the partners have maintained the size of the firm at a level large enough to undertake major projects yet sufficiently compact for the partners to give a personal service and for the firm to undertake smaller schemes economically. Project schemes range in value from a few thousand pounds to over £80m.

The partners are active engineers taking personal responsibility for each project throughout its course to provide clients with continuity, consistency and direct accountability. We believe this philosophy is no less important today than it was when the firm was founded: that some clients have continued to appoint HPM for over half a century further encourages this outlook.

We undertake structural and civil engineering work of all forms with an emphasis on new construction and refurbishment schemes. We also offer the service of planning supervisor under the CDM Regulations enacted.

About half of our commissions are located in the London area and we have wide experience of the restraints imposed by confined sites, deep excavations and retained facades. Outside the London area we have completed projects as widely placed as Aberdeen, Plymouth and the Channel Islands; overseas work has been carried out in Belgium, France, Greece, West Africa, Mauritius and the USA.

In addition to our design services we provide a range of supporting advisory services including feasibility studies, structural assessments, design appraisal, construction monitoring, party wall and expert witness advice.
