The London Crown Glass Company specialises in high quality conservation glasses selected from the best of the traditional European craftsman glassblowers.

If you study the facade of any fine, old building you will see at once that original window glass is very special. Old glass distorts the image, reflects, sparkles and flashes in the light to produce an unique, pleasurable and quite fascinating effect.

These reflective qualities add greatly to the personality of old buildings.

Before 1900 most glass was handblown and as a result it was impossible to achieve a perfectly flat product. However skilled the blower, his glass contained some blemishes such as "ream", a small wave or fold in the glass, and "seeds", small air bubbles.

These imperfections are the true characteristics of handblown glass.

For the past forty years the float glass process has resulted in a perfect product whose uniform reflective capacity, when used in a period building, robs it of its personality and sparkle.

It is most important, therefore, when restoring period windows that you choose the correct glass.

Within our range there are products suitable for all types of building, dating from the reign of Elizabeth the First to that of George the Fifth.

The London Crown Glass Company is a family business founded by Christopher Salmond, whose family have supplied window glass for four generations from the early nineteenth century. He is available to identify and list original period window glass for clients and to advise on the most authentic handblown glass where replacement is necessary.

The list below shows a few of the major listed buildings, where London Crown glass is glazed

Our reputation within the industry is unrivalled and we have a strong and growing reputation within Swindon and Wiltshire for being the company to call for all specialist and traditional lime mortar works.

Why Lime for Old Buildings?

Lime plaster is a traditional building material which unlike concrete and gypsum is breathable (vapour permeable), allowing the masonry to 'breathe', this means moisture is not held in the masonry and can naturally evaporate.

Gypsum plaster is used in modern houses and works well with modern cavity walls; however, most old buildings do not have cavity walls and unfortunately many have been incorrectly restored and plastered with gypsum or modern cement which is not vapour permeable, thus trapping moisture in the masonry. Therefore, the use of modern materials (cement and gypsum) on old buildings often leads to damp, mould and can cause long term damage to the masonry.

Lime Render is breathable (vapour permeable) and it has a degree of elasticity, meaning it allows the masonry to breath and can flex with the building (old buildings naturally flex with the seasons); however, cement is often used as a low-cost alternative to lime render, unfortunately this a false economy which often leads to long term problems.

Cement is not vapour permeable and it is hard, the cement will eventually crack because it will not move with the building. Once cement on the outside of a building cracks water ingress arises, water ingress leads to cement coming away from the wall and the wall itself becomes 'friable' (easily crumbled). Should a wall get to the stage of being friable, sections of the wall itself may need to be replaced to maintain the integrity of the wall.

Lime Repair was set up in 2005 by Julie Haddow a lime plastering specialist of 15 years' experience.

In 2000 she was awarded the prestigious William Morris Craft Fellowship by the SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) where she was influenced by notable architects, craftsmen, structural engineers and surveyors in the field of conservation.

Julie began her love affair with lime working for Capps & Capps in Hay on Wye.

"I had just completed an HND in 'Design Crafts' at Hereford where I enjoyed working with and understanding materials. My first job was mixing lime plaster and making moulds to repair a Jacobean strap-work ceiling at Llowes Court. I was in heaven just being in the building never mind using my recently acquired mould-making skills. I never set out to be a 'plasterer' but my love of materials and old buildings led me down the road to lime…."

Julie also works as a lime and historic building consultant and teaches skills for the lime trades for Lime Producers, the Princes Foundation, The New Royal Botanic Gardens in Jordan to name a few. She has made contributions to English Heritages now book – 'Mortars, Renders & Plasters, Adam Weismann & Katy Bryces 'Using Natural Finishes.'
Qualifications

The founder of Lime Repair is recognised on a national level as a 'William Morris Craft Fellow'; she has contributed to specialist books including 'Using Natural Finishes' by Adam Weismann & Katy Brice and English Heritages new 'Mortars, Renders & Plasters'.

Julie Haddow teaches on specialist lime courses for the 'Princes Trust' and 'The Welsh Centre for Traditional & Sustainable Building.' and speaks regularly for the S.P.A.B. in London on lime plastering and the need for historic buildings to 'breathe.

In 2004 Lifestiles was established by co-directors Mike Chillery and David Osborn. Our mission is to provide a second to none service to our customers. Lifestiles supply aesthetically pleasing, quality natural roofing products to customers across the UK.

Success was achieved relatively quickly with the Lifestiles quality Hand Made Clay Plain Tile produced in colours and pre-mixed blends to suit most projects and geographical areas. The Ashvale Hand Crafted range of clay plain tiles was quickly added to the product offering followed by the Ashvale pantiles, Natural Slate, Natural Cotswold Stone and more recently Machine Made Clay Tiles in large and small formats. However, we will not stop there and we are currently developing the Baythorne Blend of bricks amongst other products.

Quality is always paramount in our minds when we are sourcing new products. Consequently, they are tested at Lucideon (an independent UK facility approved by both UKAS and the British Standards Institute) to ensure they meet the relevant British Standards. To back this up and give the customer further peace of mind we offer a 30 year product guarantee (see the technical section of this website).

With over 50 years of experience our staff are specialists in natural roofing solutions and have been involved with many prestigious projects over the years including projects for Oxford and Cambridge Universities, English Heritage, Royal Residencies, Private Housing for Celebrities, Listed Buildings, etc. However, much of our work involves helping with one off housing projects from large Self Builds to small extensions so please contact us with your enquiry however large or small.

Our story - The Lettering Arts Trust was founded in 1988 by Harriet Frazer MBE as ‘Memorials by Artists’

This was in response to Harriet’s need to find someone to make a unique memorial for her step-daughter Sophie, who died suddenly at the age of 26. It was hard at that time to find a letter carving artist, but harder still discovering that church regulations prevented her from inscribing her daughter’s poetry onto a memorial.

When Harriet finally did find artist Simon Verity, she determined that other people wanting to mark the life of a loved one should not have to go through what she had to before finding Simon. So she formed Memorials by Artists – to help others, and help foster the art and craft of creating unique well-designed memorials.

Today’s world is increasingly pixelated… digital… ephemeral. What better way to make a lasting mark than by having a name, a phrase, a date, hand carved forever in stone by a letter-carving artist?
GallerySnape.jpg

Our vision - We believe in the importance of creating beautiful hand-carved letters, and passing on the skills to create them. Hand-carved letters are a permanent mark in stone that show the love a person has for another; keep alive the memory of a special event; or mark a beloved place for years to come.

The highly honed skill of letter carving that had been passed down from the Romans, nearly faded in the mechanised society of the early 20th century. This was when a new generation of lettering artists such as Eric Gill made it their mission to revive it. This is our mission, too.

Today, we are the UK’s leading voice for promoting the lettering arts. We are a nonprofit organisation that fund apprenticeships, hold workshops, host talks, sell fine works, and curate exhibitions. Our aim is to inspire people about lettering, while equipping letter-carving artists with the skills they need for now and the future.

Our Mission - We also want to make creating a memorial by an artist as rewarding, inspiring and as meaningful as possible. For over 30 years, this has been one of our most important goals. Thanks to our register containing 75 of the UK’s finest letter-carving artists, with whom we have strong relationships, we are confident people who come to us gain a memorial by artists that at once inspires, consoles and delights.

Since 1988, Memorials by Artists has evolved. Today, it is the Lettering Arts Trust which not only helps people commission memorials, but also holds exhibitions and runs apprenticeship schemes for lettering artists. Its constant has been to keep the art of letter carving alive, to make it accessible to people, and to give advice and information through the process of commissioning a piece, be it a memorial or a garden sundial.

Founded in 1976, the LBSG has identified around 800 different types of postbox. There are more than 400 different varieties of pillar box; around 160 types of wall box, 66 Ludlow boxes and almost 80 versions of the lamp box. New boxes are still appearing while there are still many older boxes waiting to be discovered and rediscovered. The Letter Box Study Group is the acknowledged authority on the history and development of the British roadside letter box.

Membership - We are an active group of individuals devoted to the study of postboxes. From modest beginnings four decades ago the Letter Box Study Group has grown to become the recognised authority on the subject – all through the voluntary efforts of its members.
