St Astier Natural Hydraulic Limes (NHL) and derivative products have been produced by the same families since 1851. The mineralogical characteristics of the raw materials, the manufacturing process and the quality controls are such that users are assured of the constant performance of the products. The experience acquired over the years is shared with the user through the assistance available from the Technical Department and from carefully chosen specialist distributors, able to assess the type of lime mortar, plaster or render required. This is especially important in Conservation and Restoration, where mortars should be project specific in order to ensure their compatibility with existing materials and the fabric of the buildings.

In new build St.Astier Limes have developed a range of binders and ready mixed mortars combining all the characteristics required by today’s builder in terms of speed of setting, strength, elasticity, plasticity, low capillarity and shrinkage, with the breathability and aesthetic quality of lime mortars. The result is that these lime mortars are becoming the obvious alternative to cement mortars also in the new build and eco build sectors.

St. Astier natural hydraulic limes (NHL) and lime mortars have been adopted in a number of countries and in the most diverse climatic conditions, from the Arctic circle to the desert, from marine locations to high mountain sites.They have been and are used on some of the most important world heritage sites, in vernacular and ordinary buildings, in reproducing the characteristics of ancient mortars as well as providing solutions to modern architectural mortar requirements. The technical expertise at hand will also assist in achieving engineering solutions when an alternative to cement mortars is required.

Rose of Jericho was founded in the late 1980s in the period immediately after the ‘lime method', developed by Eve and Robert Baker, was employed so successfully for the repair and conservation of the figure sculptures on the West Front of Wells Cathedral.

These were exciting times, born of the recognition that non-permeable mortars, plasters and paints were inappropriate for, and indeed often accelerated the decay of our built heritage.

The use of lime was a near-forgotten practice, as cement mortars, gypsum plasters and non-breathable emulsion paints had become the norm. Building construction books and courses only mentioned lime as a workability additive for cement mortars.

This had to change !

Picreator was founded in 1967, by the late John and Melanie Lawson who ran the Company from 1967 till 2015.
One the first companies of its kind in the world, it was set up to supply professional users with small quantities of products needed to restore and preserve all types of fine-art objects and surfaces, from paper to stone.

The range of products that we now manufacture includes the world-renowned RENAISSANCE WAX which was developed in the laboratories of the British Museum and is specified and used to preserve all types of objects in the museum and historic collection. Picreator is often consulted by architects and other specifying authorities who wish to use its products in the cleaning and maintenance of both interior and exterior surfaces.

The first stage of any restoration project is usually cleaning of surfaces to assess the extent of damage. Safe cleaning, with professionally-approved products, is vital to avoid immediate harm or creation of long-term conservation problems.

In 1984 Picreator was honoured to be granted a Royal Warrant by Her Majesty The Queen as “supplier of products for restoration and conservation”. Our products are frequently in use by restorers at various Royal residences to preserve interior objects and surfaces as well as exterior items such as sculptures in the gardens.

The business continues to grow under the directorship of Michelle Burns, John and Melanie’s daughter, who has worked in the Company since the early 1990’s.
