Established in 1973, JHA has a team of highly trained architects who promote the philosophy of the practice and share an extensive body of experience. The practice is well known for its consistency of approach and meticulous attention to detail. JHA’s success over 40 years has produced many satisfied clients and has received numerous awards for excellence in design, conservation and craftsmanship. Philosophy - All projects are approached on the basis of academic research and stylistic understanding. JHA seeks to consolidate earlier work within a framework of aesthetic and architectural ideas unique to each project. JHA accepts no distinction between the design of new buildings or elements and the restoration or repair of historic structures. This emphasis on design applies to everything the practice does, from the smallest building repair to major projects and consultancy services. Historic buildings work is not simply an archaeological exercise but rather the re-presentation of architecture from earlier generations, encompassing the beautiful accretions of time in a way that is valid for its present day uses. This requires the understanding of a designer and the expertise of a craftsman. Repair and restoration, together with traditional craftsmanship and 21st century technology, are equally valid responses in their appropriate contexts. JHA’s philosophy is to respect the work of others, whilst acknowledging its own contribution of elements, or buildings, of a contemporary character. This approach enables JHA to work constructively with other professionals and help clients, whether they are institutional, developer, public sector or private individuals, to find ways to capitalize on their asset. Much of JHA’s work is supported by grant-giving agencies and has been recognised with numerous national and international awards for excellence in design, conservation and craftsmanship since the practice’s inception. |
