Measures to reduce the environmental and energy impact of the existing UK building stock include improving, refurbishing and retro-fitting. Within this context there is an assumption that traditional (pre-1919) buildings - solid wall/permeable construction comprising around 23% of the total UK building stock - perform poorly and consequently require retro-fitting. While radically improving the performance of the traditional built environment is vital and urgent, a considerable lack of knowledge, incomplete data and relevant skills exists in this arena.
An immediate objective of the STBA is to focus on the risks and benefits associated with generic approaches to repair, maintenance and retro-fitting of traditional buildings, in particular those earmarked for the Green Deal packages.

New Build - Szerelmey has specialised in new build projects since the 1970s. We deliver buildings throughout London and across the UK.
We design, supply and install new stonework and other hard bodied materials and have our own in house design team of architects, engineers and designers.
Externals: we deliver external cladding and full wall build up from and including the supporting structures.
Internals: We undertake flooring, wall cladding, ceilings, bathrooms, staircases, spas, swimming pools and can offer full build ups and lightweight solutions.
Hard Landscaping: we specialise in complex hard landscaping solutions, paving, water features, benches, planters, steps, ramps.
Materials: we work with stone, faience, terracotta, glazed brick, brick, pyrolave, terrazzo, agglomerate, mosaics.
Since the recreation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999 the Scottish Executive has identified the importance of cultural activities as a contributor to national well-being, and recent ventures in literature, drama, and music testify to this encouraging cultural atmosphere. However, general awareness of Scotland’s stained lass can be patchy to say the least.
We began as the stained glass Symposium in 2003 when Alison Robertson was working for the Church of Scotland and dealing with applications for new stained glass windows. This was an unstructured forum with only one topic — stained glass. There discussions took place three times a year and the organization developed into the independent Scottish Stained Glass Trust.
The Symposium members include stained glass artists, conservators, historians, and representatives of religious, secular, charitable or public bodies, all having an interest in stained glass in Scotland.
The Symposium has concerns about the proper maintenance of glass, which is too often left in the hands of well-meaning but inadequately skilled carers.
In partnership with the University of Edinburgh Scottish Studies Archive the Scottish Stained Glass Trust made a film Crear McCartney’s Dolphinton Windows (2013). This engaging film showing the making of the windows from start to finish and hearing Crear’s story about the making runs for 45 minutes.
In 2011 the Symposium ran a pilot project to record stained glass in their new national register of stained glass in Scotland. In Autumn 2015, the online Database, hosted by Scran, was launched at www.stainedglasstrustscotland.org.uk. Our Excel database is gradually being converted to the Scran format and new entries are being submitted monthly. A training manual is currently being developed in order for additional volunteers to contribute to the Database.

The team specialises in working with lime mortar. All of our stone work is fitted with lime in order to protect the stone by providing a flexible and breathable joint. We also undertake re-pointing work removing old lime mortar and cement and replace this with a suitable hydraulic or non-hydraulic lime. All of our mortar mixes are site specific to ensure our work is long lasting, aesthetically pleasing and suitable for the location. We offer free advice for anyone considering stone repairs or lime mortar re-pointing.
As a small independent stonemason in Sussex we are able to offer very reasonable prices and a methodical approach to all of our projects.
Our role is to work with other members of the design team, to provide sound advice on contract procurement and construction costs and maintain financial control from project inception to building completion. This includes developing feasibility studies and preparing applications for funding or grant aid.
Due to our successful financial management of projects, we have developed a close working relationship with a number of clients resulting in repeat business. We are proud to name the Royal Household, The National Trust and the London Diocesan Board for Schools amongst many of our longstanding clients.
SAVE Europe’s Heritage was founded in 1995 as the sister organisation of SAVE Britain’s Heritage. SAVE Europe’s Heritage has published reports on endangered great houses in France and Hungary and a report on the threat to the landscape of the villas of the Veneto. With Moscow Architectural Preservation Society (MAPS) it has published a report on Moscow (now in its second edition) and another on the city of Samara titled Samara: Endangered City on the Volga . A new report Silesia: Land of Dying Country Houses was published by SAVE Europe in late 2009.
MAPS and SAVE Europe's Heritage published St Petersburg: Heritage at Risk in 2012. Published to coincide with the 34th Session of UNESCO that took place in St Petersburg in the summer of 2012, this bilingual, lavishly illustrated book, emphasises St Petersburg’s greatness as a classical city, but also shows the importance of the city’s industrial and Soviet heritage, much of which is shamefully undervalued today.
In October 2019 SAVE Europe published a new report about Tbilisi, Georgia. The report shines a light on the incredible architectural beauty of the 'Paris of the Caucasus' revealing surprises such as a strong constructivist and post-war modernist legacy as well as art nouveau and art deco of great majesty and delicacy.

Our work encompasses architectural wood carving, historic restoration, gilding and new commissions. We work with many private and public bodies, including interior designers, artists, antique dealers, restoration and conservation firms, architects, museums and Royal palaces. Our clients include the National Trust, English Heritage, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Windsor Castle, English Heritage, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Geffrye Museum, Thomas Heatherwick Studios, St James’s and Buckingham Palaces, Westlands architectural salvage company, St Paul’s Cathedral and other Wren churches in the City of London. We like to use native, indigenous woods, such as lime and oak, and enjoy creating our own designs for specific projects, which we often model in clay before carving them in wood. We are expert in gilding and polychroming as well as finishing the wood with suitable oils, stains and waxes. We have strong links with colleagues in related trades and professions, from stonecarvers to muralists, so can advise on a wide range of work. We enjoy the variety of our work, and are open to all kinds of projects. We are based in London and Bristol, with our main workshop in Tottenham, north London.
Ashley Sands - I studied A levels and a foundation art course in Bristol then joined my father’s business of picture conservation at the International Fine Arts Conservation Studios. Here I spent a few years learning various trades in the restoration field including picture lining, architectural gilding, paint finishes and fine decoration. I worked on a variety of projects including The Cubed Rooms at Wilton House, Salisbury, Nottingham Catholic Cathedral, The Gaiety Theatre, Isle of Man and The Hay House, Georgia, USA, as well as painting restoration at Hampton Court, Kensington Palace and The Royal Academy.
In 1994 I went into further education at The City and Guilds of London Art School, where I studied conservation for one year and then traditional woodcarving and gilding for a further two years. Both Robert and I graduated in 1997 and we set up our business together the following year.
In 2004 I went to Gibraltar and spent two years living there and in Spain. I joined the Gibraltar Arts and Crafts Centre, taught evening classes and showed in exhibitions. I returned to live in Somerset with workshops based there and in London.
I often work alongside my former colleagues at IFACS and Bush and Berry Conservation Studios on restoration projects including The Reform Club, Pall Mall, Worcester Guild Hall and Wellington School Chapel in Somerset.
I also work with my brothers Mark and Corin (www.corinsands-art.de), who are both specialist painters and artists who work internationally. We have worked on restoration projects together including Avebury Manor and Windsor Castle.
Robert Randall - After leaving school in North London I began a three year cabinet making apprenticeship, proceeding from there to The London College of Furniture where I studied furniture making and design. On completion of the course I worked for Bim Burton as a designer and furniture maker.
Drawing has always been important to me and I continued to draw throughout this period at this time mainly from the model. The combination of the two practices led me to carving and the City and Guilds School of Art. My furniture making experience and knowledge supported the discipline of carving and guilding. It was here at the school I met Ashley Sands and after leaving the school we formed our company Sands and Randall. In the last 15 years our commissions have been extensive and varied from chainsaw carving at the Folkstone Triennale to restoration at the Reform Club Pall Mall, work for Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, restoration in Royal Palaces and to collaborating on work with contemporary artists.
I teach as senior carving lecture at the City and Guilds where I have been for the past three years.
