We have been supporting timber traders for over 125 years and have seen climate change become a defining feature for the government, regulators and customers. As well as supporting our members’ interest, we work to maintain and enhance timber’s sustainable reputation at a national, European and international level.

Tiles have a history stretching back more than one thousand years. In the 13th and 14th centuries Europe’s churches were paved with decorated tiles. At the same time buildings in the Arab world were adorned with richly coloured tiles. Holland was an important centre for tiles in the 17th and 18th centuries and in the 19th century Britain pioneered mass-produced tiles. The 20th century has seen both a decline and a revival in tile-making. Tiles are now much collected and studied. Tiles are all around us for everyone to enjoy. Ceramic tiles cover walls and floors, roofs and pavements, furniture and stoves, and can be seen in churches and mosques, pubs and shops, hospitals and homes. They are often combined with other forms of ceramics such as terracotta, faience and mosaic.
The Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society (TACS) has served as Britain’s national society promoting the study and conservation of tiles and architectural ceramics since 1981. An international membership of individuals and institutions is drawn from the fields of tile museums, conservation, manufacturing (both industrial and craft), architecture, design, tile collecting and antiques.
Since formation, TTA has more than doubled in size as the single, independent association for the entire UK tiling industry. TTA now has more than 1,000 member business units, consisting of tiling contractors, fixers, distributors, retailers and manufacturers. The aim is to achieve a competent, qualified workforce in the industry.
TTA operates as a Trade Association with the TTA Board having overall responsibility for the work of the Association, as well as being responsible for future policy and financial matters. Many members of the Board and Committees have contributed to the formation of British Standards, which all TTA members follow.
The Tile Association is a member of Build UK– who lead the construction industry by bringing together clients, main contractors and trade associations; and CPA (Construction Products Association) – who represent the UK’s manufacturers and distributors of construction products and materials.

I undertake practical brickwork conservation projects, on a diverse range of traditional buildings and structures including small, rural vernacular cottages, boundary & garden walls, canal structures, Georgian and Victorian town houses - both listed and unlisted. My clients are sympathetic owners of traditional buildings, architects, building managers and conservation professionals who are passionate about their buildings.
They recognise the harm that inappropriate methods and modern materials such as cement mortars & renders have done, or can do, to traditional brick work and wish not only to retain the significance and character of their buildings but also to restore their functionality. Training and Development:
Each surveyor is supported in their Continued Professional Development and training to help maintain and constantly improve our knowledge and experience base. This is not only provided by our training, equipment and software partners, but also at events organised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), The Survey Association (TSA) and the Chartered Institution for Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES).
Health and Safety:
To best protect our surveyors and clients, all of our surveyors are provided with CITB - Construction Skills CSCS Smartcard training and Mineral Products Qualification Council - Contractor Safety Passports. We have been approved for the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS). We are also completely open to adapting to any site specific inductions and procedures.
We conform to RICS Practice Standards, UK “Surveying safely”. Our goal is to maintain constant health and safety awareness and to be a Zero Harm business.
Equipment:
We believe in using the best equipment available and all of our surveyors use the following Leica Geosystems and Maptek instruments; Precise Levels, Total Stations, 3D Laser Scanners, Surveying GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and Disto Laser Measures.

Quality Assurance:
Terra Measurement is committed achieving the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management certification and has recently begun an extensive consultation. We are committed to maintaining the highest quality throughout all our processes, from project planning to data archiving.
We are Associate members of The Survey Association (TSA).
As a matter of priority we target particularly listed buildings within public parks and open spaces, and other sites with scope for continuous public access (for instance-- where there is a reasonable proximity to an established public footpath or other right of way) or where there is scope for negotiating managed public access. Since the inception of the Trust, our main role has been to initiate, promote, fund, implement, endow and generally act as a catalyst in various historic ‘buildings at risk’ projects. Projects have included The Gunnersbury Temple in London (1994 -1998), Garrick’s Temple to Shakespeare at Hampton (1996 -2004), and most recently the Cilwendeg Shell House in Pembrokeshire (beginning 2003). Tees Archaeology monitor all planning applications and other development proposals in Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees, and advise the local planning authority on a suitable response should a proposed development affect an archaeological site. This function is carried out in fulfillment of government policy as set out in the National Planning Policy Framework (2012).
In addition, our team undertakes architectural conservation projects both as main contractor or as a nominated or specialist subcontractor. This includes providing condition surveys, specifications and expert advice on a wide range of building conservation issues as well as managing & executing practical conservation measures.
The company is based in South East London with 450m2 of secure and well-equipped studio space where objects on almost any scale can be treated. Many of our projects involve working on site in museums, churches or heritage properties across the country. We have built up excellent organisational abilities, in terms of providing appropriate equipment and personnel, to complete contracts to a consistently high standard.
Taylor Pearce were granted the Royal Warrant as Conservators of Sculpture to Her Majesty the Queen in 1996.
We now have a stock holding of over 6000 square metres of stained glass, consisting of over 160 stained glass colours, 30,000 glass rondels and 500 glass bullions.
A glazing division, Quorn Glass, was formed in 1992, which in 1994-1995 re-glazed over 2000 square metres of clear antique restoration glass in Somerset House, London.
New premises were purchased in 1999 together with a glazing company in Loughborough, and our glazing division is now known as Quorn and Loughborough Glass. We also became a member of the Glass and Glazing Federation.
We now have a stained glass factory of over 10,000 square feet, with a large stained glass showroom displaying the full range of antique glass, coloured glass and stained glass for customers or architects to view.

From minimum intervention repairs to complete integrated conservation, planned alterations and reinstatement following major loss Taliesin Conservation brings together the highest standard of building craft skills, supplemented with a considered approach to project management.

Other historic replicas and reconstruction carried out by McCurdy & Co. include houses, barns and farm buildings, medieval halls, shops and commercial buildings. These projects have been undertaken for various clients including Open Air Museums in both the United Kingdom and the United States of America, archaeological and preservation trusts, government bodies and commercial developments, corporate and private clients.
Using their specialist conservation skills and understanding of historic timber structures, McCurdy & Co. are able to undertake the research, design, fabrication and erection of any form of historic timber framed structure or building. Examples could range from a barn to a Guildhall, a medieval manor house to an Elizabethan Theatre. These can be an exact replica of an existing building, a fully researched and authentic reconstruction or a purpose designed new timber frame building.
Consultancy - Whether directly advising a building owner or working as part of a professional design team McCurdy & Co. is able to offer clients specialist consultancy advice and the benefit of more than 25 years of in-depth research and practical knowledge. Consultancy and advisory work can encompass structural surveys, record drawing and archaeological analysis, schedules of repair, maintenance programmes and quinquennial surveys. Working to the client’s brief and after consultation and liaison with conservation officers and English Heritage, this data is used to provide the detailed design and specification for a programme of timber repairs and reconstruction.

Peter McCurdy sits on committees at both ICOMOS (The International Council of Monuments & Sites) and TRADA (The Timber Research and Development Association). The company is committed to advancing the understanding of traditional timber frame construction, the ongoing developments of techniques for repair and conservation and opportunities for new construction.
McCurdy & Co. runs in-house training in its own specialist workshops as well as organising seminars and CPD events around the UK. Conservation
McCurdy & Co. undertakes both timber repairs to existing historic buildings as well as the fabrication of frames and the construction of new timber structures. Projects include: the reconstruction of Barley Hall, a listed 14th century monastic hospice in the heart of York and full archaelogical survey, condition analysis and structural repairs to the Great Barn at Harmondsworth, one of the UK’s finest surviving mediaeval barns.
Such conservation work is based on the thorough understanding and use of not only traditional carpentry skills but also historic working methods and techniques, combined with specialist conservation skills.
Reconstruction - The detailed design fabrication and erection work on Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, including associated research into its original construction, has established McCurdy & Co. as leaders in the field of authentic reconstruction of historic timber framed buildings. The Company has also undertaken the design and erection of a number of new timber framed structures including award winning Summer House at the Chelsea Flower Show and the Krishnamurti Centre in Hampshire.
Our forte is the supply of locally grown, naturally durable, sustainable, British timber species which can be used for exterior applications without the addition of potentially toxic preservative treatments normally needed to enhance their longevity.
These species grow naturally in the UK and the revenues have a direct benefit to our own UK economy, in addition to having a very small carbon footprint compared to the thousands of miles our previously traditionally supplied imported timbers have to travel.
As part of this ethos we are producing our own version of burnt timber cladding, “Tiga Wood” using British timber species. This technique of burning and charring timber has been used over the centuries by the Vikings and Ancient Britons and in other parts of the world to prolong the longevity of timber and is making a resurgence in modern Britain as a way of increasing the longevity, fire retardancy and aesthetic properties of locally grown British Larch cladding.

Increasing demand in the following decades saw them move to larger premises in Ongar, Essex and subsequently on to the current base in Tiptree in the 1990s, during which time Mumford & Wood were the first manufacturer in the UK to install an automated window construction line.
