DOCOMOMO (International Working Party for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement) is a voluntary organisation concerned with the protection of buildings of the Modern Movement.

Towards the end of the twentieth century many modern movement buildings were demolished, at risk or had changed beyond all recognition. Docomomo International was founded in the Netherlands as a non-profit organization in the late 1980s, and there are now over 60 national and regional Docomomo organisations worldwide.

Docomomo UK is a non-profit organization that is run on a voluntary basis. You don’t need to be an architect to join, just enthusiastic about the Modern Movement.

Docomomo International forms the nexus of over 60 national and regional organisations. It organizes an international biennial conference, co-ordinates specialist committees, and publishes a biannual expert journal. Their website can be reached here.

Docomomo’s main goals are brought together in the Eindhoven statement which was issued at the conclusion of the founding conference in 1990:
- Bring the significance of the modern movement to the attention of the public, the authorities, the professionals and the educational community concerned with the built environment.
- Identify and promote the recording of the works of the modern movement, including a register, drawings, photographs, archives and other documents.
- Foster the development of appropriate techniques and methods of conservation and disseminate this knowledge throughout the professions.
- Oppose destruction and disfigurement of significant works of the modern movement.
- Identify and attract funding for documentation and conservation.
- Explore and develop the knowledge of the modern movement.

Docomomo UK organizes events through a working party of volunteers and new input is always welcome. If you would like to contribute your time, or have ideas for new events please contact us here.

Donald Insall Associates is an award-winning architectural practice and historic buildings consultancy, specialising in the care, repair, adaptation and conservation of historic buildings, as well as designing new buildings for sensitive sites. For over 60 years, we have pioneered a creative approach to conservation, centred on the belief that change is continuous and buildings are, in effect, ‘alive’.

We believe that historic buildings should be constantly maintained and sensitively adapted so that they might be lastingly used and enjoyed. Our work is underpinned by rigorous analysis of the built environment and we place a high value on specialist expertise. Members have comprehensive knowledge of architectural history; conservation; traditional building materials and repair techniques; modern standards and technologies. While every project is unique, our aim is always creative conservation, which means balancing the preservation of a building or place with the need for intervention to ensure its continued vitality.

We are distinguished by our combination of specialist expertise and creativity. Our contribution to the process of managing change in the historic environment and conservation is authoritative and respected by local authorities, Historic England and other stakeholders. Our work has been recognised with over 200 awards, including the RIBA, Civic Trust and Europa Nostra conservation awards.

Donald Insall Associates is a 100% employee-owned practice, comprising over 120 members across eight UK offices.

Manufacturing award winning traditional clay roof tiles in true clay colours since 1805 - Dreadnought Tiles are recognised for their unrivalled true clay colours. Colour is generated exclusively through the delicate control of the kiln atmosphere, without the use of surface pigments, stains or coloured sands. The colour of a Dreadnought Tile is unique, their natural colour has a warmth and subtlety that cannot be matched with artificial colours and will endure for the lifetime of the tile, as the colour is fired into the body rather than applied as a surface coating.

The Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (DSWA) was established in 1968 and is a registered charity that works to advance education in the craft and heritage of dry stone walling for the public benefit.

Since its formation the DSWA has grown in to a national organisation recognised and respected for its work. The national office is based in Cumbria and there are 18 regional branches spread throughout the UK.

What we do - Dry stone walls have been part of the landscape of the UK for thousands of years. The DSWA is the country’s only organisation dedicated to protecting this rich history.
It is estimated that there are over 193,000 km of dry stone field walls in the UK but only 13% of these are in good condition, 17% in an advanced stage of decay and the remaining 70% are derelict.

The DSWA is committed to raising awareness of the importance of our dry stone walls and their heritage to both the general public, land owners and the government. The Association, both nationally and through its network of local branches, runs numerous training courses throughout the year. This ensures the skills required to maintain and build new walls are passed down to the next generation of dry stone wallers.

How we work - Under charity law the Dry Stone Walling Association is governed by a board of Trustees, who are volunteers. The Trustee Board consists of up to twelve elected Trustees and from this number the Trustees elect a Chairman and Deputy Chairman. All the Association’s legal responsibilities lie with the Trustees who formulate the Association’s direction, policies, budget and staffing levels.

There are currently two sub committees:

- The Craft Skills Group, responsible for the Association’s training and certification activities.
- The Staffing Committee, looking at the staffing requirements of the Association.

The Association employs one full time Administrator to manage the day to day running of the national office and an Admin Assistant. The Training and Education Coordinator is currently a freelance part-time post

Deborah Gardner trained as an Architectural Technologist and has over twenty years experience in the building industry. It was whilst working as a technician that she was introduced to the world of conservation, engaged as part of a team refurbishing Lewes Crown Courts and historic buildings owned by the Ministry of Defence.

From that point Deborah became passionate about the South East’s built heritage and has worked exclusively in the field of conservation, particularly within the field of repair. Whilst employed by professional Architects and Building Surveyors Deborah worked as Contracts Administrator on behalf of English Heritage, on numerous monuments within East Sussex & Kent, and private clients producing drawings and specifications for the consolidation and repair of masonry and timber-framed buildings.
Debbie Abs

Having gained academic qualifications in Building Conservation and becoming an accredited member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, Deborah launched her own company, DGC Historic Buildings Consultants in November 2002.

Almost immediately Deborah’s extensive technical knowledge of traditional materials and methods were recognised and she became historic buildings consultant to a number of Local Planning Authorities within the area, appointed to advise on planning and listed building applications, assess information in pursuant of the discharge of conditions, provide training and advise staff within Development Control and Building Control as well as contractors and owners of the implications of works, either repair or new build to the historic fabric.

DBR is a specialist conservation company dealing with the cleaning and repair of historic fabric and the regeneration of historic buildings.

High-quality workmanship, expertise and a dedicated and sensitive approach to the care of buildings are the foundation of our thriving business. Well known for our exemplary in-house craft trades, we are one of the leading conservation specialists in London and the South East of England, working on some of the UK’s most notable landmarks, including Grade listed buildings, scheduled monuments and World Heritage Sites, as well as parochial churches, country estates and modest memorials. Every project we undertake is treated with passion and enthusiasm that is unrivalled in our industry, leaving a lasting impression on our clients and the buildings we care for.

DBR London was established in 1990, to form a highly specialist façade conservation company to tackle the problems of masonry decay in London.

The early years of the business as a specialist masonry contractor quickly gained momentum with a reputation for quality. This resulted in larger projects being awarded, and DBR London evolving into a Principal Contractor, taking charge of entire conservation projects.

In 2008 as the company grew, it became apparent that DBR’s delivery to our clients required an ‘in house ‘roofing division to compliment our ‘in house’ masonry façade specialism, thus providing a complete external envelope repair service. DBR Leadwork was formed to satisfy this need and soon became successful in its own right as a Principal Contractor for roofing projects as well as a partner to DBR London.

In 2011 DBR Conservation was formed in response to a growing requirement for DBR to undertake entire conservation projects both externally and internally. This enabled us to embody the skills of gilders and conservators for work to historic polychrome surfaces and fine objects.

More recently DBRs progression has seen the forming of DBR Southern, which harks back to DBR London’s roots as a specialist masonry contractor.

DBR is also expanding its joinery service to historic buildings along with fire safety improvements in historic building environments following on from our multi million pound fire safety improvement scheme at the Palace of Westminster.

Additionally we have recently launched our Drone Division flying state of the art UAV’s by CAA approved ‘in house’ masonry specialists.

DBR is also expanding its UK operations and our major projects division with landmark conservation projects including the recent award of the multi million pound external conservation of Liberty London.

The whole DBR group continues to recruit specialist crafts to strengthen and expand our skill base along with dedicated and passionate managers whose mission is to provide an exemplary service in the field of historic building conservation, repair and regeneration.

There will be many more chapters in DBRs journey that will ensure our clients will receive a comprehensive service for their historic buildings, and which will continue to provide a ‘go to’ business that ensures quality and care in a skillful and dynamic manner.

Craft Glass Ltd :- We are a traditional glazing Company that have been manufacturing new traditional leaded lights, restoring existing leaded lights and restoring metal windows and flat iron casements for over 30 years.

We can refurbish just about any type of window or glass panel but our particular area of expertise is leaded lights and metal, or crittall windows, Craft glass can also restore your decorative glass panels and fix broken windows.

Working with contractors on large projects or with private clients on residential properties we take care to preserve the windows that you care about.

Most of the window restoration projects that Craft Glass carry out involve Grade I and Grade II listed properties but plenty of projects involved working with customers who simply just love slim window sight lines or the traditional old leaded light look and want to create features of windows at their property which can’t be replicated with modern style windows.

Old rusty metal windows / crittall windows, flat iron casements are just some of the terminology used, but all metal windows can be restored and outlast the new products available.
