Mission - The Architecture Foundation leads the conversation on the development of London and contributes to a global discourse about the architect’s changing role and responsibilities. We pursue this mission through the delivery of an accessible public programme that makes space for emerging architects, groups historically underrepresented in the profession, and representatives of a wide range of related disciplines. Exploring the architect’s capacity to combat climate change and systemic social inequalities represent central concerns of the programme.

Programme - We host debates, make films, commission critical writing, curate exhibitions, publish books and engage industry figures with the aim of improving the quality of the discourse around London’s built environment. The 2018 programme featured 120 live events, ranging in scale from building tours for 30 people to lectures delivered to audiences of 1900.

Now in its fourth year, the lecture programme, Architecture on Stage, is delivered in partnership with the Barbican Centre and has featured many of the best architects from across the world. Recent landmark publications have included New Architects 3, a guide to the best practices to have set up in the UK over the past decade, and Project Interrupted, a book presenting lectures by British housing architects.

The free-to-download London Architecture Guide app has enabled tens of thousands of Londoners to learn about the architecture of their city. Competitions and free workplace residencies directed at young practices have provided career-transforming opportunities. The New Architecture Writers programme for young BAME critics is cultivating a more inclusive discourse, while the Architecture Schools database is opening up conversations between students and academics in universities.

Funding - The Architecture Foundation receives no public funding and is reliant on the financial support of many architects, engineers, developers and other built environment professionals across London, who are listed at the bottom of this website’s homepage.

We are Scotland’s design champion. We believe in the power of design to improve people’s lives. We bring people together to make better places for everyone.

Architecture and Design Scotland has set out its plans for the coming decade in its new Corporate Strategy for 2021-31. Click here to read the A&DS Corporate Strategy for 2021-31. In this document you will find out how A&DS plans to work with to see the Place Principle become an everyday reality in the way Scotland’s places are created, adapted and sustained.
Our vision

A Scotland whose places are healthy, sustainable and thriving, where everyone works together to shape their future.

Our Aim - To see the benefits of the Place Principle become an everyday reality in the way Scotland’s places are created, adapted and sustained.

Context - Design can help realise the country’s ambitions, captured in initiatives such as Housing to 2040, 20 Minute Neighbourhoods, Community Wealth Building, Town Centre Regeneration and Community-Led Regeneration. In this context the design of our places is central to realising the National Outcomes in the Scottish Government’s National Performance Framework.

Our role is described in Creating Places, Scotland’s Policy for Architecture and Place. We were set up in 2005 by the Scottish Government and we are an executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB).

How we can help - A core aim of our strategy is to create the conditions that will ensure that the Place Principle becomes the ‘new normal’ for those involved in planning, designing, delivering and sustaining Scotland’s places.

We also know from experience that a place is better when the people who live there work together to shape it. The Place Principle, adopted by the Scottish Government in 2019, asks agencies in a place to collaborate with the people who live there to create a shared vision for its future.

Our role will be to provide leadership on the spatial aspects of the Place Principle to stimulate a step-change in how Scotland’s places are planned, designed, delivered and sustained. We will work with our partners to demonstrate what a joined-up approach looks like and the benefits it brings. We will use our experience and professional skills to inspire and support all those involved in creating, adapting and sustaining Scotland’s places.

Ultimately, our strategy is to use our remit and expertise to tackle the big challenges we all face. Above all, A&DS is about bringing people together to create better places for everyone.

Who we are - The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) is a registered charity, working since 1976 to promote the conservation and sustainable re-use of historic buildings for the benefit of communities across the UK, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas.

The AHF exists to help communities find enterprising ways to revitalise the old buildings they love. We help them with advice, grants and loans. Our support acts as a catalyst for putting sustainable heritage at the heart of vibrant local economies. For over 40 years, we’ve been the leading social investor in creating new futures for historic buildings.

What we do - The AHF is unique in that we are able to offer support to local communities at every point in the life-cycle of a project – from start-up advice and grants for early development work and project planning, through to loans for acquisition and as working capital for project delivery. We are often the first point of contact for community groups seeking to rescue historic buildings ‘at risk’.

We have a network of local officers based in each UK nation and the English regions who can offer advice and support to your group, whatever stage you are at. If we can’t help, we’ll signpost you to other organisations that may be able to.

ARB was established by Parliament in 1997 to regulate the architects’ profession in the UK. We are an independent, public interest body and our work in regulating architects ensures that good standards within the profession are consistently maintained for the benefit of the public and architects alike.

Our duties are contained in the 1997 Architects Act, and cover six main areas:

- Prescribing – or ‘recognising’ – the qualifications needed to become an architect
- Keeping the UK Register of Architects
- Ensuring that architects meet our standards for conduct and practice
- Investigating complaints about an architect’s conduct or competence
- Making sure that only people on our Register offer their services as an architect.
- Acting as the UK’s regulatory authority for architects

Our work is overseen by a Board of 11 members all appointed by the Privy Council.

This includes one independent, non-executive Chair and ten non-executive Board members made up of five members of the public and five architects.

Antony Gibb Historic Buildings Consultants help people understand, enjoy and use their architectural heritage. We work for public, private and professional clients, often as part of multi-disciplinary teams. We provide services covering heritage consultancy, building surveys, architecture, interior design and design review.

We specialise in historic and listed buildings and provide a range of services for private clients. We carry out building surveys, specify repairs and oversee work on site.

We work with Architects, providing planning and heritage advice for their schemes and prepare Heritage Impact Statements to accompany planning applications.

We design extensions and alterations to listed and historic structures. We always save and retrofit buildings where possible. We use low carbon materials in our designs, repair like-with-like, and use traditional and re-used materials in our designs.

The results are high quality, solid buildings that look right in historic contexts and which play their part in reducing carbon usage.

We’ve won some awards for our designs, most recently ‘Best Remodelling’ and ‘Best Refurbishment of an Historic Building’ at the Jersey Design Awards 2019.

As an architect, I’m passionate about old buildings and helping their owners keep them fit for modern living and modern use. I know what it’s like for small congregations to try to keep up with maintaining their church buildings without forgetting their mission – and I love to be involved with them. I’m also concerned about green issues and one of my new projects is the design and build of a small private chapel in straw‐bale construction with a reciprocal framed roof. I’ve also got a few projects and potential projects in London – all small‐scale extensions for homeowners on a budget.

Setting up on my own at the age when many people retire is a new adventure. I’ve worked with my late husband in our partnership Robert and Anne Netherwood, done an 8‐year stint with him setting up and running the Home Advisory Service in Dodoma Tanzania, and helped him set up the practice again when we returned to the UK. Changing hats, I was ordained in 1991 and spent 16 years looking after three very rural parishes in North Shropshire. I retired from the parishes when Rob was diagnosed with cancer, and helped him set up Greenspace Architects Ltd with Kevin Slack. I worked freelance for Greenspace until 2015, and now I have my own Chartered Practice – working from home

I’ve been very lucky to have Andy Hales helping me as a freelance assistant for three years until April 2019. Andy recently completed his RIBA Part 2 studies at the College of Alternative Technology in Machynlleth and has taught me a great deal about straw bale construction, hemp-crete insulation and other environmentally friendly building techniques.

I’m a member of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and the Green Register, and I’m on the RIBA Conservation Register. In December 2017 I received accreditation from the RIBA as a Conservation Architect.

What We Do - A little bit of TLC for your old buildings......

Throughout the country are numerous old buildings, some 300 to 400 years old or more. Our philosophy is to care for these old buildings by using tried and tested materials and craftsmanship to ensure they are handed down and enjoyed by those who come after us for many more years to come.

We are conservationists who's aim is to repair rather than replace in order to retain those subtle and fragile qualities associated with the fabric of old and historic buildings.

Whether you have a need to maintain an old building or you have taken on a major project, wether you need to repair an old lath and plaster ceiling or care for your stone or brickwork our true love for old buildings can help.

Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, we are consulted by local planning authorities in England and Wales on all Listed Building Consent applications involving an element of demolition, as well as on cases relating to other types of designated and undesignated heritage. Sharing knowledge - As well as our casework and campaigning for historic buildings and places of all ages and all types, we also work to promote and share our knowledge to influence and enlighten.
