As an independent professional society IIC is uniquely positioned in the world. We believe conservation is of great value, by looking after our cultural heritage and our own and others’ cultural identity we are helping to improve the richness and quality of life for everyone.

IIC was founded in 1950 by a group of men and women who witnessed dramatic events during WW2. A number of them were part of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives programme and they were involved in saving internationally important historic and artistic works from being lost forever, they became known as the Monuments Men.

Today we have a strong global network of distinguished Fellows, members and Institutions representing more than 70 countries. We have close relationships with thousands of Conservators and heritage professionals internationally.

IIC has over 7,000 engaged supporters and 40,000 social media contacts globally. We have long-established partnerships with leading museums, universities and heritage bodies all around the world.

Established in 1959, COTAC’s founding principle was in its recognition of the need for specialists to properly specify and oversee work involved in repairing and conserving historic buildings and churches. Over the years COTAC has persistently and influentially worked to lift standards, develop training qualifications and build networks across the conservation, repair and maintenance sector of the construction industry. As a Charity this has involved working influentially with national agencies, professional and standard setting bodies, educational establishments and training interests.

The Council's 21st century objectives are to advance the education and training of all those involved in the protection and preservation of the historic environment that is of cultural, architectural or historical value, and to provide knowledge in support of training and education in the arts and skills required to protect and preserve it. To advance conservation education and training and support its knowledge base, COTAC will adopt an integrated lay, craft, specialist and professional approach, whilst engaging with a wide range of interested parties to achieve its aims.

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is a professional body for construction management and leadership. The institute promotes the science and practice of building and its members work in the development, conservation and improvement of the built environment in the UK and overseas. The CIOB also accredits university degrees, educational courses and training.

The CIOB launched its Building Conservation Certification Scheme in 2017. Members with appropriate qualifications and experience can now be certified at three levels:

Registered - professionals with some experience and knowledge in the area of heritage and conservation;

Proficient - professionals with significant experience of traditional buildings including listed buildings and scheduled monuments;

Certified - experts in the field with a deep understanding of the significance and historic value of buildings and the philosophy of building conservation

The fellowship provides grants for short study trips abroad, granted annually to students of conservation in the United Kingdom, whether they are at university or college, or within the formative years of their careers. Trade apprentices, trainee architects and landscape architects are all eligible.

The emphasis is on practical work in preference to pure study/research. The Fellowship aims to encourage individual initiative, not to fund groups of students making joint study trips.

The awards are not restricted to British nationals, but foreign students should plan projects outside their country of origin. To be eligible, applicants must be working in one of the following conservation subjects:
a.) historic buildings
b.) historic man made landscapes and historic gardens
c.) allied trades, techniques, skills and crafts
d.) artefacts.

We work to conserve the rich, historical legacy of old buildings and homes in London. With our rich stock of architectural salvage including doors, fireplaces, mouldings, reclaimed flooring and ironwork, we assist individuals and businesses in finding and restoring reclaimed building material and architectural salvage that works with and often matches the original building's design and materials.

Old buildings fascinate us because of their age, archaeology and architectural style. Their spiritual, social or political history can offer a connection with people from the past. They have survived over time to be read and understood both today and hopefully into the future. They are certainly emotive, maybe complex, but often they are simply beautiful. At best an old building is one that reveals a past, a present and, if cherished, a future. Sadly at worst it is forgotten, unused and decayed, its past erased, its present stagnant, and its future rapidly becoming unsustainable.

Maybank Buildings Conservation was founded in 2013 by Geoff Maybank FRICS IHBC to provide an holistic approach to building conservation. We look to provide our clients with a thorough understanding of building conservation issues from disrepair and misuse of materials to the correct specifying of repairs.

After 38 years in the property industry, a thorough understanding of the commercial needs of our clients underpins our archaeological approach to understanding historic buildings. From recording, drawing and analysing your historic building through to repair and reuse Maybank Buildings Conservation can help.

Reclaim, Reuse, Repeat since 1991. Salvo is the marketplace for architectural antiques, garden, decorative, salvage and reclaimed building materials. Salvo was established to promote the reuse of materials from demolition with the aim of reducing the amount of salvageable materials that end up in landfill.

Salvo is a resource that supports the reclamation industry by providing demolition alerts, a worldwide directory of salvage-related businesses, fairs, for sale listings and Salvo online shop, where you can buy from trusted Salvo Code dealers.

Salvage has always been appreciated for its connection with history, but it should also be increasingly appealing for the environmental benefits of reuse and its essential relationship with our future.
