Bates Zambelli Chartered Architects make high quality, innovative, thought-provoking buildings. We offer urban, interior and landscape design as well architecture. Our continued involvement in university teaching and research and our extensive experience in practice enable us to approach design in a rounded, informed and considered manner. Key to that approach, we believe, is a close and sustained dialogue with each client, a dialogue that we look to begin at the earliest stage of a project and seek to continue long after completion.

Bates Zambelli Chartered Architects, is the central part of Bates Zambelli Limited, a company that offers many professional building procurement services under the trading styles of BZ Consulting and BZ Conservation. These include planning consultancy, historic building conservation and repair, development advice, party wall negotiations and health and safety CDM co-ordination. The breadth of services we offer not only provide the convenience and economies of a one stop shop for our clients but their multiple perspectives can enable us to find procurement solutions that may not otherwise be apparent.

Bates Zambelli Chartered Architects incorporated in 2000, arising from the Practice STS Bates Architects founded in 1991. Sherry Bates and Alessandro Zambelli are its sole and founding directors. Both Sherry and Alessandro are registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

BZ Conservation - BZ Conservation is the dedicated historic buildings division of Bates Zambelli Limited, a firm of Chartered Architects incorporated in 2000 and arising from STS Bates Architects, a practice founded in 1991. Sherry Bates and Alessandro Zambelli are the sole and founding directors of Bates Zambelli Limited. Sherry is an inspecting architect for the Oxford and St Albans dioceses. He is also an associate member of the Ecclesiastical Architect's and Surveyors Association (EASA).

As a practice, Bates Zambelli is interested in architecture as a cultural endeavour as much as a profession. Both principals have a background in teaching architecture at university and are interested in the history and theory of the subject. We remain engaged in current debates relating to architectural theory and practice. Although the design of new buildings lies at the core of what we do, it is our architectural position that building conservation skills are vital to the architect in the UK today, as so much new building involves historic buildings or sites adjacent to them. Moreover historic buildings and building techniques have much to teach us that is relevant to new design work.

We are a firm of structural engineers and designers who do what we do because we love designing structures and seeing them successfully built. We love using the combination of engineering theory and creative thinking to solve problems, and creating real physical solutions that you can touch and jump on. We also love the feeling of satisfaction gained from seeing a project go well, experiencing real teamwork, and talking to happy and satisfied clients.

Established in 1993, we are an ambitious practice that has built an experienced team of people who deliver high quality and significant projects. We invest heavily in software, equipment, and training to help us achieve excellence in design and the delivery of projects. We are very proud of our work, and would like to develop and grow further.

Our belief that engineering design should be approached with passion as well as precision has led to award-winning buildings in a wide range of fields. We aim to create ingenious but appropriate designs, in close partnership with client and design team. Creativity is essential, tempered with experience and knowledge. We are not afraid of innovation. One of our particular strengths is pro-activity and awareness, anticipating situations so that they can be dealt with satisfactorily.

Our experience of construction is wide, with the emphasis on quality as well as scale. We aim to deliver a product that sets a high standard in technique and design, representing best value. We have very strict QA systems and everything produced by our office is independently checked; we work as a team, and we support each other in our endeavours. Our quality management systems are ISO 9001: 2015 registered and certified by the British Standards Institution.

Established over 140 years ago, Bakers of Danbury enjoy a reputation for providing high quality craftsmanship. We benefit from having a directly employed team of experienced carpenters, bricklayers, joiners, stonemasons and other tradesmen. The longest serving having worked up through an apprenticeship scheme with Bakers of Danbury has been with us over 35 years.

Our projects include new builds and refurbishment in the educational, commercial, housing and health sectors as well as repair, conservation and restoration of historic listed buildings, churches and ancient monuments. We also have a specialist insurance repairs division that works closely with leading insurance companies, specialist loss adjusters and engineers to repair structural faults in buildings.

We pride ourselves on attention to detail and the quality of the works carried out.

As a principal contractor we cover every aspect of the project; whether it be a new build or a restoration. Our projects often benefit from our in-house joinery and stone masonry workshops. Our joinery workshop offers a full design and manufacture service of bespoke joinery and furniture, woodcarving and architectural timber work, whilst our stone masons provide specialist stone cleaning and stone carving.

Bakers are widely known for their expertise on historic and listed properties; interestingly many of the methods used in conservation and restoration work remain very similar to those used over a century ago. Recent restoration and alteration projects include works to Westminster Abbey, The Charterhouse in London, Westminster Cathedral and St Pauls Cathedral amongst many other projects.

BM TRADA is proud to be part of Element, the market leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification services.

BM TRADA exists to help make certain that the materials, products and processes that we test, inspect and certify for our customers are always safe, quality, compliant and fit for purpose. What we ultimately deliver is Certainty to those sectors where failure in service is simply not an option.
Our Origins

BM TRADA has a long history and heritage that we are justifiably proud of and we can trace our origins back over 80 years to 1934.

We are a global testing, inspection and certification company that delivers critical services in materials testing, product qualification testing, inspection and certification to the Fire and Building Products marketplace, where failure in service is simply not an option.

Everything BM TRADA does is designed to help our customers to develop better products and processes; get their products to market on time; save time and money; and minimize the risk associated with product and process development as well as product production.

Our purpose as a business is a simple one. To help our customers to make certain that all of the materials, products and processes we test, inspect and certify for them, regardless of the industry sectors they operate in, are always safe in their end application; are of marketable quality; are compliant with all relevant standards and industry regulations; and are ultimately fit for purpose.

In 1934, a forerunner of what later became the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA) was set up, its mission, to promote the use of wood in construction in the face of a growth in the use of alternative materials.

60 years later in the mid 1990s and following a management buyout of TRADA’s operating companies, the testing, inspection and certification services were grouped together under the three brands, BM TRADA Certification, Chiltern International Fire and TRADA Technology.

In 2013, these three businesses came together and rebranded as BM TRADA, part of an exercise to clearly position the organization as a single leading international Testing, Inspection and Certification business.

In 2015, BM TRADA was acquired by Exova, which itself was subsequently acquired by Element Materials Technology.

Today BM TRADA is part of the Element Group, a global network of more than 6,000 engaged experts, operating out of over 200 laboratories, located in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia.

We are the fastest growing testing, inspection, certification and calibration business in the world.

ATLAS has been representing the leading companies in the lightning protection and specialist access at height sectors since 1946. Celebrating the highest standards for over 75 years, ATLAS is at the forefront of industry developments and committed to improving working practices, technical excellence and the skills of the workforce to provide the highest quality service to the industry’s clients.

To celebrate ATLAS’ 75th Anniversary, ATLAS has launched a video which takes you through 75 years of ATLAS history. ATLAS compares landmarks in its history to worldwide events, including when England won the World Cup!

ATLAS works with a range of key stakeholders including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), British Standards Institution (BSI), Build UK, and Access Industry Forum (AIF) to influence decisions, raise standards and shape the business environment for the benefit of its members.

With Unite the Union, ATLAS operates a National Joint Council which agrees terms and conditions for the industry’s workforce. With CITB, it created and supports a dedicated industry Training Group (the Steeplejack and Lightning Protection Training Group (SLPTG)) to provide training and qualifications tailored to the needs of the industry, including apprenticeship programmes offering a formal training route for new entrants.

Originally formed as the National Federation of Master Steeplejacks & Lightning Conductor Engineers (NFMS&LCE) in 2003, the organisation became ATLAS. With an established track record, ATLAS is unrivalled when it comes to providing experience in lightning protection and specialist access solutions, with members leading the way in health and safety, technical innovation and training and skills.

Those who live in or visit Britain’s unique heritage of small historic towns and villages value them as an irreplaceable national asset. In each region they have their own special character and setting.

Can we afford to lose this precious inheritance because of unsympathetic, unsuitable and out-of-scale development? Surely every effort must be made to preserve the essential character of these towns and villages for future generations. Their conservation is far more than a local matter. It touches the whole population, as well as visitors from all over the world. Indeed, the attractiveness of Britain’s historic towns and villages is an impor tant economic asset as well as an environmental issue. Our concern is for the buildings, many of them listed, in their setting in the countryside, and for maintaining the harmony of materials, design and scale which form the overall character of each place. There must be care for detail – shop fronts and signs, window-frames and doors as well as street furniture which fit the local scene and add to, rather than detract from its harmony.

Unlike national bodies and regional authorities, which have wider responsibilities, ASHTAV, through the lo cal societies, groups and councils which are our members, possesses a wealth of local knowledge and commit ment. Our members, working together with other like-minded organisations are well placed to care for the vast wealth of architecture, history and community life which surrounds them.

We concentrate on the particular needs and concerns of small historic places. We co-ordinate and encourage mutual support amongst our members, facilitating the exchange of experience and expertise and providing opportunities through seminars and lectures for increasing knowledge of conservation issues and the planning process. We also provide a corporate national voice on matters of concern to our members generally.

ASHTAV’s objectives are:

- Uniting Amenity Societies and Groups, Parish and Town Councils in small historic towns and villages in a common effort for the preservation, protection and, where appropriate, sensitive adaptation of their features of historic and public interest.
- Encouraging high standards of architecture and planning.
- Stimulating the public interest and care for the beauty, character and fabric of small historic towns and vil lages in the context of an understanding of the social and economic changes which affect them.

ASHTAV recognises the many social and economic changes affecting town and village life – the growth of industry and tourism, the migration from large towns and cities to the countryside, the decline of traditional agriculture and demographic change. These changes inevitably alter the pattern of life in rural Britain. They cannot be resisted but they should be introduced with respect for existing patterns and values.

New developments can take place with sensitive consultation and respect for the existing scene and community life. Our aim is to ensure that wherever change is thought to be necessary, those whom it most directly affects are equipped to take a full and effective part in the decisions involved.

ASHTAV receives grants from English Heritage and other bodies, but is otherwise self supporting and relies on the commitment and voluntary effort of its members and Fiends.
