Verity & Beverley, Architects and Designers are a creative and innovative practice experienced in the conservation, restoration and refurbishment of listed buildings, new houses, modern structures within historic environments and interior architectural design.

Originally founded in 1871 by Thomas Verity the practice designed numerous iconic landmark buildings throughout the United Kingdom including The Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus, the Pavilion at Lord’s Cricket Ground, Scarborough Spa and many of the Art Deco theatres and cinemas for the Paramount company.

Based in Tetbury in Gloucestershire since 1981 we have built up a strong reputation throughout the Cotswolds and surrounding Counties for our pragmatic yet creative design approach with both traditional Cotswold vernacular and also contemporary new buildings and alterations to meet modern living requirements.

We are a community of Architects, Masterplanners and Heritage Consultants. By continually reimagining places within urban and rural landscapes across the world, we unlock value and create sustainable futures for our clients’ sites. We research, analyse and then masterplan, survey, conserve and repair, adapt and refurbish, design, extend and build new within complex contexts. We understand the values embedded in these places and how to build a successful case for change.

We work to the highest standards within our client’s aspirations and budgets. This is the most satisfying and rewarding way of working. It is because the places on which we work matter so much that they demand design and intervention that does not compromise what has come before. Working like this requires resilience, energy and creativity to make the most of the opportunities we are given.

Roger Mears Architects believes that architecture is the key to enhancing our clients’ experience of daily life.

Our philosophy is to create beautifully crafted buildings that reflect our clients’ styles and personalities, within an historic context. Our work is guided by SPAB principles, with a focus on conservation and sustainability –caring for traditional buildings using a modern approach.

Each project is unique with its own story of its journey through time. We help uncover each building’s distinctive features, which determines careful and meticulous repair. Where required, we add to the narrative of the building by designing new features, additions and extensions derived from the original details, but in a 21st- century idiom. Each repair is honest in detail, and each addition is designed to ensure that the building is enjoyed by another new generation.

A selection of our work from our 35 year history is displayed in the Projects section, with some shown below.

We are a small architectural studio specialising in the trasnformation of historic buildings and the design of beautifully crafted new homes.

Mark Hines was the project architect responsible for the £1.4bn remodelling and transformation of the BBC’s grade two* listed Broadcasting House. He is a former design director of respected London design practice MacCormac Jamieson Prichard and is one of the UK’s few Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Scholars, which was set up in 1877 by William Morris.

Having gained valuable experience in a large office, our architectural practice unites contemporary design and conservation and is focussed on how architecture can help improve people’s quality of life.

Working on listed buildings often requires the involvement of a design architect and a conservation specialist. Our background in both worlds unites high-quality design and conservation expertise in a single practice, allowing us to breathe new life into all types of historic buildings.

We see architecture, restoration, interior design, and conservation work as discrete strands of a single discipline, rather than separate specialisms in their own right. This approach can help enhance the experience and image of the building and create places where historic architecture, later modifications, carefully judged restoration work and successive redevelopment projects all merge and blend seamlessly into a single harmonious whole.

Born out of a passion for craft and making, our new projects combine the qualities of traditional architecture but meet contemporary needs. We try to give all our buildings an air of timelessness and durability with a focus on warmth, comfort, and character and use beautiful, traditional materials like brick, stone, and timber in different ways to create cosy, humane and atmospheric buildings.

Our experience in the design, conservation, and commercial worlds allows the development of new proposals that are directly informed by a thorough understanding of the specific historical, cultural, social, economic and physical context of each situation and helps us simplify the design and construction process, balance competing demands and minimise costs.

We are design-led and research-orientated. We are critical about what we do. But we have lots of fun as we love the challenge of the craft of building.

We undertake commissions both small and large and specialise in projects that respond creatively to their context.

We work with an interdisciplinary network of makers, builders, and designers leading to innovative collaborations.

We are committed to design, detailing and materiality. Attention to detail has always been our lens, and our love for design and building sites is the engine.

We take the term collaboration seriously. Architecture studios have a social responsibility to the public, a technical responsibility to the structure and an intellectual responsibility

We are a medium sized practice with specialist skills in building conservation and sustainable architecture. We offer creative solutions to design problems within a historic or a contemporary context. We have excellent technical ability in building conservation but understand the need for creativity in all things architectural. Working in close collaboration with our clients and other professionals, the practice has a deserved reputation in the field of the historic environment, especially within the ecclesiastical world but bring our skills to bear on projects for many others who own or care for old buildings, as well as a large number of private clients commissioning domestic work.

Based in the cathedral city of Salisbury, projects range regionally, across the south of England and further afield. We have no desire to impose a house-style, rather to find design outcomes appropriate to context and to individual circumstance. The portfolio of work on this website illustrates the diversity of the solutions that result and the partners, Michael Drury and Antony Feltham~King are always very happy to discuss future projects in person.
