Paul Travis Conservation is a consultancy specialising in the sensitive repair, conservation, and alteration of historic buildings and monuments. Our experience lies in the survey, investigation and diagnosis of problems within historic buildings and monuments, and the development of repair strategies, with sensitive and effective designs to allow the buildings of the past perform more effectively without compromising their significance and special interest.

Paul is a Chartered Architectural Technologist and Building Surveyor, a member of the Diocesan Advisory Committee for Rochester, a member of the Plans Sub Committee for London Diocese, and an approved Quinquennial Inspector for the London, Southwark, Rochester, St Albans and Canterbury Dioceses.

Our in-depth knowledge of materials and processes allows us to develop repairs and adaptations using traditional and modern materials where they will not be detrimental to the historic fabric.
Paul Travis

After graduating in history, founder Paul’s eclectic experience in conservation, archaeology and construction has afforded him a holistic perspective in the development, performance and understanding of historic buildings, materials and their design.

With an honours degree in History and an MSc (Distinction) in Historic Conservation, Paul’s 35 year career has embraced History, Architectural Conservation, and Archaeology. He was part of the team that discovered London’s Roman amphitheatre, and worked on buildings as diverse as Westminster Abbey, the Albert Memorial and projects varying in scale from the Parliamentary Estate to private houses.

Paul has extensive experience in the survey, analysis and repair of all major building and decorative materials, the statutory protection offered to historic buildings, and the methods of their sensitive and appropriate repair. He has worked for a number of high quality and prestigious architectural practices and conservation companies, but is equally at home offering advice and expertise to private clients, charities and organisations.

An Accredited Conservationist with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, Paul is a contributor to magazines, and has been a speaker on the subject of conservation at “Grand Designs Live”, ‘The National Home Improvement Show’, and to students and CIAT delegates.

At Priory Heritage we are passionate about the preservation of historic buildings and believe in a future for all listed and historic buildings.

We support Historic England’s ‘Constructive Conservation’ approach to maintain our ancient buildings but on occasion allow them to change to develop alongside modern needs.

After carefully evaluating significance for each structure we ensure any changes are undertaken sensitively and with consideration for preserving the best of what has been created by previous generations. We believe alterations and repairs should always be done to the best of our ability and provided our work is of the best quality we should not be ashamed of the contribution our generation makes to the history of English Architecture.

My Shropshire based company is dedicated to the conservation of traditional brickwork in all its forms.

I undertake practical brickwork conservation projects, on a diverse range of traditional buildings and structures including small, rural vernacular cottages, boundary & garden walls, canal structures, Georgian and Victorian town houses - both listed and unlisted. My clients are sympathetic owners of traditional buildings, architects, building managers and conservation professionals who are passionate about their buildings.

They recognise the harm that inappropriate methods and modern materials such as cement mortars & renders have done, or can do, to traditional brick work and wish not only to retain the significance and character of their buildings but also to restore their functionality. Like me, they recognise the importance of an informed approach to the execution of repairs to traditional & historic buildings.

Philip Hughes Associates was founded in 1982 and is dedicated to the repair and conservation of historic buildings. The practice has grown gradually and employs both architects and surveyors with a partnership being formed from April 2019. The team is highly motivated and committed to providing clients with an individual service whilst striving for excellence in the care of historic buildings.

Work undertaken by the practice predominantly involves the analysis, maintenance, repair and conservation of historic buildings including the preparation of reports on the condition of buildings and investigation of specific defects. Projects regularly involve elements of new design - these are carefully managed to respect the historic setting and fabric of the existing building. The practice has a particular interest in sustainability, reuse and working with traditional materials to minimise environmental impact.

The philosophy of repair adopted by the practice is in line with the principles of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Every effort is made to retain and conserve historic fabric. Repairs are undertaken using traditional techniques, although modern conservation systems are not precluded.

The whole PHA team are deeply committed to the conservation of the historic environment. Two members of the practice are former SPAB scholars and four others have post graduate diplomas in conservation. Two members of the practice have previously worked for National Amenity Societies and all have membership of a range of societies and organisations related to historic building conservation, including voluntary roles for a number of societies and trusts.

Projects range from structural repairs of small agricultural buildings to highly specialist conservation work on large country houses and churches. Most projects involve preparation of condition reports, agreement of phased programmes of work, preparation of proposals (often including elements of new design), specification, tendering, contract administration and budgetary control.

Clients include The National Trust, English Heritage, The Churches Conservation Trust, Building Preservation Trusts, Councils and PCCs as well as many private clients.
