Born in London in 1965 into a family of artists and engineers, I originally trained at the Hereford School of Blacksmithing before mastering my craft working with several artist blacksmiths in the UK, Poland, and Portugal. I subsequently ran my own workshop/studio in the UK for many years, creating contemporary and traditional metal work for a wide range of businesses and individual clients, before relocating to South-west France in order to expand my studio and develop my own work further.
My work combines traditional and contemporary techniques with engineering precision and an artist's eye, to create sculptural and flowing metalwork as exclusive 'one-off' pieces forming anything from a small sculpture to a spiral staircase or large gate. I enjoy working with a wide range of metallic materials including iron in its wrought form, steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, bronze and titanium, as well as with other materials such as glass, stone and wood depending on the design.
I love to design, to play with an idea, shape or form, and then look at its functionality and turn it upside down. Why should a gate have a four-sided frame? The form should be an integral part of the working of the piece.
My interests lie in our engineering heritage, the Industrial Revolution, the relationship between our our rural past and our technological future, and in the amazing beauty found in nature. Traditional techniques such as mortice and tenon joints, punched-through bars and rivets may seem like analogue processes in a digital world, but I believe it is important to see the method of joining the parts to create the whole. Just as with a visible stitch in clothing, I also like to see form and function go hand in hand with line and proportion.

Firebird Forge is a full working forge which offers traditional and contemporarily designed commissions in various metals; as well as the usual restoration and repair work. The forge is also run, by appointment, as a teaching school in traditional blacksmithing techniques. Although the forge is open to the general public to allow them to come and learn how to blacksmith on a day to day basis, further training is also given to younger smiths in the form of work placements from college. Individuals from as far as Russia and Australia have come to learn to forge at the school and the owner, David Mortimer (Mort the Blacksmith), has carried out commissions across the Uk since the year 2000.
Exterior Ironwork – Traditional Blacksmithing
Gates and Railings
Exterior Ironwork can be made to fit almost anywhere, according to the customers designs or to my own drawings. My interests are in producing high quality decorative railings that are traditionally forged, rather than fabricated plain security rails. In my experience such hand forged railings inevitably lead to an appreciation of the property and will increase the property’s value considerably. All quotes are free as long as they are within a reasonable distance of Wadhurst (20 miles) otherwise a reasonable charge for costs in time and fuel will be applied.
Garden Sculpture And Furniture
Please contact me to discuss designs for any bespoke items for your garden such as arches, benches or garden sculptures. I will happily draw up digital images and free quotes for your consideration.
Ironwork Restoration – Traditional Blacksmithing
A significant amount of my commission work is the restoration of traditional ironwork, either for prestige estate gates, commercial properties or from period households. The techniques involved in creating traditional ironwork are the same techniques used in its restoration all all guidelines for restoration, as laid down by the NHIG, are diligently followed.
All restoration work is photographed in situ prior to any work being undertaken, as is the work processes then done to the pieces, along with the finished work.
A full report will then be produced for the property owner and for the local listing authorities if required. Wrought iron is generally used in the repairs rather than mild steel. Most repaired work is then hot zinc sprayed and professionally painted so it will last indefinitely but this depends upon advise from the local authorities if the property is protected. At all times the local listing officers are kept informed and made aware of all the aspects of the restoration process.

Agnes Jones is a sculptor based in Glasgow who draws in steel to make linear pieces full of character. Translating pen drawings into steel, her work changes this very solid material into something that looks like it has been sketched in the air. From large public art sculptures to garden and homeware commissions, her work can be seen across the UK.
"I have worked as an art blacksmith for ten years now, and have always been led by drawing. Working with line drawing allows me to create pieces that are full of character, movement and narrative, and allows a structural material to seem like I have quickly sketched it in mid-air. I have been exploring how to use line more sparingly and simply, leaving the viewer to fill in form on their own. The location and area around each piece is important as the work is forced to interact with the shapes, movement and feel of a site."

Adrian Wood is a university graduate with a degree in fine art sculpture from The University of London. A chance visit to a forge gave Adrian Wood his first taste of blacksmithing. He recalls; ”From the first moment I hit the hot steel I knew what I wanted to do.”
Adrian`s first job was at a renowned workshop near York where he worked on a number of prestigious projects. After which he worked for Brian Russell, widely regarded as one of the finest blacksmiths in the UK. Brian’s approach and processes to creating bespoke and uniquely designed metalwork had an enormous effect on the designs and processes created by Adrian Wood Artist Blacksmiths.
Traditional blacksmithing techniques are used to create contemporary and innovative ways to fulfil the client’s needs. The designs are beautifully hand drawn with delicate attention given to the smallest of details, resulting in fine craftsmanship, superb detailing and a substantial build quality that reflects a belief in a lasting beauty and quality.
Adrian’s area of expertise lies in his ability to understand the client’s needs and provide detailed drawings and finally to create the work to a high standard and build quality.

JACK WAYGOOD - ARTIST - BIOGRAPHY
Enrolling on the BA Artist Blacksmithing course at Hereford College of Arts. Jack discovered a range of interests spanning from architecture, engineering, nature, traveller culture and music, which still inspire and shape his work today.
After graduating from HCA, he moved to Brecon, set up his own blacksmithing business and worked freelance as a special effect’s technician for film and television. He collaborated on popular productions such as ‘Poldark’ and ‘Casualty’ and became fascinated with pyrotechnics. At the same time his passion for high quality craftsmanship was fuelled by the advanced traditional smithing course ‘design and forge work skills’, which he completed part time.
In search for further progression, Jack then travelled as a journeyman blacksmith. He closed his own shop and worked in forges all over the UK learning a wide range of different approaches to his trade. In 2018 he was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust fellowship and the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust to travel in Europe.
In Sweden Jack reconnected with his love for art at Steneby HDK (University of Gothenburg). This was a turning point in his work, he experimented with figurative sculpture and began developing his bizarre illustrative style, exploring the world of puppetry and performance. When rediscovering earlier influences from a variety of European artists and art forms, such as Jean Tinguely, the Commedia Dell’ Arte and closer to home, L.S. Lowry. He also found new inspirations such as Sharmanka and studied the art of street protest which would play a huge role in his visual style and language.
‘The reason I got into working metal was to make art in the first place’.
In 2019 The British Artist Blacksmith Association and The Jinny Quinell Memorial Trust awarded Jack a bursary to continue his travels. He visited Japan, learning about blade smithing and bunraku then returned to Europe for an extended stint in industrial forging, tool making, architectural and artistic forge work. During his time in Germany he made contact with a blacksmith in New Zealand and found himself in Auckland working on the Lord of the Rings TV series the following summer.
Jack is now based in Scotland, pursuing an MA in fine arts at Edinburgh College of Art. You can check out his progress by visiting his Instagram or Facebook pages.

Following this Fred traveled England working alongside some of the UK's top master blacksmiths. Traditionally known as a Journeyman during this period, Fred was part of the National Heritage Ironwork Group's bursary scheme, sponsored by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. With the journeymanship completed in 2013, Fred attained the Heritage Skills Blacksmithing Award, during which time he spent time conserving the prestigious Tijou Screens, c. 1700 ironwork at Hampton Court Palace and the conservation of the 1918 Mark V Tank on display at Imperial War Museum London.
His final piece of work during the Journeymanship, a traditionally designed Jardiniere, which was hand forged from wrought iron was highly commended by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths at the Great Yorkshire Show 2014 & on display at Hampton Court Palace.
Running a small workshop in the village of Cotesbach, 'Fred Suffield Ironwork' produced bespoke products and commissions for private clients, during which time he trained a number of apprentices and ran over 200 blacksmith experience days. After 4 years in Leicestershire, Fred moved to Lincolnshire and established Anwick Forge Ltd in 2017.
Whilst operating as Anwick Forge Ltd we have worked on a number of large projects in both the heritage and contemporary design sectors. From the Irish Embassy in Westminster and N.H.S. hospitals across London, up through the Midlands, East Anglia and into Yorkshire. We produce ironwork for renowned interior designers which is sold around the globe. We value local work and aim to keep the friendly village smithy tradition alive & the ancient hearth burning.
