Collins and Curtis have been producing high quality stone products since 1925. We directly employ dedicated master craftsmen with decades of experience, so combine traditional methods of masonry with new techniques to provide the highest quality stone products.
We supply bespoke architectural, ecclesiastical and memorial stonemasonry, as well as cills, copings, fireplaces, flooring, kitchen and bathroom tops and other items unique to your home or building.
Collins and Curtis offer a complete service from survey to installation as either main or subcontractor. We have a reputation for providing quality products at competitive prices and are focused on caring for our customers, to ensure they are delighted with the products and service they receive.
Our highly skilled stonemasons convert limestone and sandstone blocks from many quarries, into a variety of products. We supply all types of natural stonemasonry using both British and imported Limestones, Sandstones, Granite and Marble to restore existing and construct new structures. Working from our purpose-built factory in Ipswich, Suffolk our masons produce high quality bespoke natural stone products from blocks of stone (up to approximately 4m3 and weighing 10 tonnes) which are cut to size using our primary, secondary and profiling saws. All work is hand finished in our workshop.
Recent projects include Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, St Albans Cathedral, Westminster and Gonville & Caius Colleges in Cambridge and numerous churches in East Anglia.

Founded by Richard Martin in 2006, Heritage Stone Access has grown to become a company combining artisan stoneworkers with specialist rope access workers. All masons and carvers that work for HSA are cathedral trained, and all rope workers are level 3 IRATA trained. This ensures the quality of the work done is of the highest standards.
Our skills combined allow us to access any part of an historic or modern building, survey and document the findings in a comprehensive report, carry out any repairs to the fabric, and mason and carve any stonework for it. Being craftspeople ourselves we take a great amount of care in doing our best for the building.

Hot mixed air lime mortars, with or without small volumes of pozzolanic addition, were the ubiquitous lime mortar of traditional construction around the world, only falling from general use as the 20thC wore on, when the use of Portland cement or hybrid Portland cement and industrially produced dry hydrated air lime mortars displaced them from most building sites. This shift coincided with the growing disempowerment of masons and other crafts in the industry. Previously, mortar design had been the domain of the craftsmen, and wherever they were in the world, they chose to use hot mixed air lime mortars.
These mortars were the most economically made; they were quickly and efficiently prepared (by a variety of simple methods) and delivered mortars of eminent workability and usefulness. They enjoyed unparalleled water retentivity and excellent bond, and displayed maximum cohesiveness and adhesiveness.
All of these properties were shared with traditional earth-lime mortars, a mortar of similar ubiquity, which had dominated masonry construction throughout Europe and the Middle East before the 18thC and which were still commonly used for bedding mortars and base-coat plasters across the Americas even into the 20thC. Hot mixed lime and traditionally slaked lime putties were always used in conjunction with these.
Hot mixed air lime mortars, with suitable pozzolanic addition according to purpose, are eminently breathable – they have a vapour permeability more than twice that of a typical NHL mortar; they are much more effectively porous than other mortars and keep building fabric dry. They are durable and frost resilient in a properly detailed traditional building and are easy to prepare and deploy.
Hot mixed lime mortars are truly like-for-like and are compatible with all traditional fabric in ways that modern Natural Hydraulic Lime simply is not. Natural Hydraulic Limes were not much used for building in the air before the later 19thC – they were used, if at all, for water and underground works and for concretes. They were not available in North America unless imported from Europe, although natural cement was produced and was used for similarly wet situations, or as a gauge to otherwise hot mixed mortars in thick-walled military construction during the 19thC.

A Family History in Stone - Suttle is a name synonymous with Stone. Jon Suttle and his family through many generations have been connected with the stone industry in all aspects from Quarrying to Banker Masonry. These skills and traditions which span over 100 years have made this Company well equipped to the requirements of today.
Taking a brief look of the Suttle family history would start in the 1870’s when Daniel Suttle (Great Great Grandfather) moved from Suffolk to County Durham to work in the quarries of Wearsdale.
His Son George Suttle (Great Grandfather) and brother Alfie worked in the Quarries of Frosterly and Stanhope, County Durham. George as a youth also spent several years in Texas, USA learning and using explosives in Quarrying. During the depression of the 1920’s he moved the family to Dorset and worked in quarries on the Isle of Purbeck. George Suttle progressed to owning his own Quarry at Sunnyside in the Purbeck Hills where he quarried and dressed the stone until the late 1940’s.
Suttle Family - Suttle's Quarry c1930's
His son John Suttle (Great Uncle) founded his own quarries in the 1950’s on the Isle Purbeck and the Company (Suttles) continues and is still family owned and managed by his son Chris Suttle (cousin) and his sons and nephew.
Steve and Pam Paine (nee Suttle – cousin) in the 1990’s founded Hutton Stone in the Scottish borders with their own Quarries supplying Stone in that area and further afield. The Company is still family owned and managed by son Marcus Paine (cousin)
Jon Suttle was an apprentice Stone Mason with Wells Cathedral, Somerset and also worked at St John the Divine Cathedral in New York and many other prestigious buildings. His experience of working in his early years abroad and for many years in the UK has given him a depth of knowledge of the stone trade.
As families fragment over the generations the association with stone for the Suttle family has always been maintained.
