The fellowship provides grants for short study trips abroad, granted annually to students of conservation in the United Kingdom, whether they are at university or college, or within the formative years of their careers. Trade apprentices, trainee architects and landscape architects are all eligible.

The emphasis is on practical work in preference to pure study/research. The Fellowship aims to encourage individual initiative, not to fund groups of students making joint study trips.

The awards are not restricted to British nationals, but foreign students should plan projects outside their country of origin. To be eligible, applicants must be working in one of the following conservation subjects:
a.) historic buildings
b.) historic man made landscapes and historic gardens
c.) allied trades, techniques, skills and crafts
d.) artefacts.
