FRH invites its members and those interested to a new online face-to-face meeting in which we will explore ongoing efforts to safeguard abandoned religious heritage sites in Turkey. The session will be led by Çağla Parlak, Vice-Chair of the Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Kültürel Mirası Koruma Derneği – KMKD) which specialises in the documentation and risk assessment of abandoned sacred heritage buildings, offering recommendations for mitigating threats. After the earthquakes of February 2023, KMKD’s work has focused on the damage assessment of cultural heritage. Their findings and recommendations will be reflected in a report that will be released soon.
During the session, Çağla will provide an overview of the preservation challenges faced by abandoned sacred heritage in Turkey, along with the documentation efforts and protection initiatives undertaken by KMKD. She will also share some of the reports published in recent years and the new report to be published.
Featured speaker - Çağla Parlak
Çağla Parlak holds a BA in Political Science and International Relations from Istanbul University and furthered her studies in Museum Management. Between 2015 and 2020, she worked as a Projects Manager at the Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
She has led numerous endeavors in the field of cultural heritage, including post-earthquake documentation, architectural heritage at risk and capacity-building projects. Throughout her career, she has also actively contributed to research projects focusing on threats to religious sites and policy-level changes in cultural heritage management. In 2017, Çağla was nominated from Turkey to participate in the International Visitors Leadership Program of the US Department of State, where she focused on cultural heritage preservation. In 2022, she was honored as a Europa Nostra fellow in Brussels.
Currently, she is the Vice-Chair of KMKD and a freelance project manager for different organizations mainly in the cultural preservation domain with a specific focus on minority heritage, cultural rights, and promotion of intercultural dialogue.

This talk explores how ornamental iron founders developed practices of advertising their products for international markets in the 19th century. This will focus on three important contexts: first, illustrated trade catalogues; second, international exhibitions; and third, iron buildings destined for export. Taken together, these three developments spearheaded the creation of an international market for prominent iron-founders like Walter Macfarlane. These visual cultures of display – catalogues, exhibitions and public display of buildings for export – were overlapping and mutually reinforcing promotional tools that, particularly in Macfarlane’s case, became key elements in defining how iron founders wanted to present themselves to the world.

Advancements in digital technology and the removal of high entry costs have made LiDAR, 3D scanning and UAV/drones more accessible and easier to use in studying the country house. In this talk, Daniel Bochman discusses how archival country house research can be complemented by digital technologies. Utilising his own research at Dalkeith Palace and Drumlanrig Castle as examples, Daniel analyses how digital technology can deepen our understanding of country house and estate design - and can point us towards the illumination of hidden material details.
Daniel Bochman recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a PhD in Architecture. His thesis focused upon Duchess Anne Scott's eighteenth-century design and construction of Dalkeith Palace near Edinburgh, Scotland. His research was complemented by LiDAR and 3D scanning conducted at Dalkeith Palace in conjunction with extensive archival analysis. Currently, Daniel is the Head of the Innovation Experience Centre at Colt Technology Services. He oversees projects involving smart architecture, including smart buildings and smart manufacturing. He recently launched a start-up digital technology company, Net Zero Heritage, which uses IoT devices, HBIMs and digital twins/triplets to create predictive maintenance monitoring systems for heritage properties. Daniel's mission is to create affordable energy management tools that help historic properties reach their net zero carbon goals.

In this virtual talk, Roger Curtis from Historic Environment Scotland (HES) will discuss the key things to consider when retrofitting traditional buildings to improve energy efficiency whilst referencing local HES projects. Topics will include: traditional building construction, technical performance, water vapour movement, ventilation, embodied carbon, planning matters, and published guidance.
To be continued with Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings Part 2 – Measures and Implementation on Tuesday, April 12 at 6 PM.
Roger Curtis is a Chartered Building Surveyor with Building Conservation Accreditation working in historic and traditional building repair and upgrade. He completed a Masters in Building Conservation in 2003 and, following time as a building contractor, joined Historic Environment Scotland in 2006. He is now responsible for managing the Technical Research Programme. Work strands include trials and demonstration of traditional materials and technologies, energy efficiency, sustainability, climate change adaptation and the circular economy. He commissions and manages the technical publications for HES and lectures to various professional and academic audiences on technical and historical topics concerning the built environment. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, he is involved with several local history initiatives in the Scottish Borders.
The Scottish Historic Buildings Trust is delighted to deliver this free event as part of the Jedburgh CARS Education and Training Programme.
Scottish Historic Buildings Trust (SHBT) is a dynamic and innovative charity dedicated to regenerating significant historic buildings for the benefit of others.
The Trust collaborates with local communities and others to preserve significant properties at risk in Scotland. We have already restored over 30 buildings and raised over £25 million with a small team and no public funding.
You can help in many ways, from providing a donation, giving of your time as a volunteer, becoming a friend and actively telling people about the work of the charity and the opportunities to explore and use these wonderful buildings.
